“The morning after” is a review of the previous night’s Flyers’ game which, in theory, provides a more objective perspective on the game. So the Flyers seem to be playing pretty dominant hockey lately, eh? The schedule looks tough this week, and it will be a good test for the team. Not multiple choice, but one of those essay ones that you have to write in those blue books. This game was touted a clash of two of the hottest teams in the league right now. And the Flyers dominated. The game started slowly, with a bit of feeling-out in the beginning …
Remembering Pelle: How does Lindbergh rank among the Flyers’ goaltending greats?
Remembering Pelle is a five part series honoring the memory of former Flyers’ goaltender, Pelle Lindbergh, whose life was tragically cut short on November 11, 1985. A new article will run each day over the course of five days. This is part two of the series. As it stands today, the Philadelphia Flyers have invested significant time and money trying to find the next generation of star puck-stopper that will lead them to Stanley Cup glory. It’s really a short list, but one which casts a huge imprint and even bigger shadow across both ends of the ice: Bernie Parent, …
Flight Plan week of 10.31.2010
Flight Plan is a new column that will take a more in depth look at the Flyers’ upcoming opponents every week here at Flyers Faithful. The Philadelphia Flyers seemed to have wanted to start celebrating Halloween early this past week and got off to a rough start by dropping a 2-1 decision to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Flyers showed up in their hockey player costumes unfortunately they were also dressed as mindless, decaying, flesh hungry corpses while the Blue Jackets were dressed up as Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson playing Columbus and Tallahasse, their respective characters from Zombieland. In …
The morning after: Flyers @ Blue Jackets 10.25.10
“The morning after” is a review of the previous night’s Flyers’ game which, in theory, provides a more objective perspective on the game. The next part of this post is a metaphor for the effort that the Flyers showed last night:* They sucked. *Brian Boucher and Ville Leino aside. Some quick thoughts: What do Ville Leino, Blair Betts, and Scott Hartnell all have in common? They all have more goals than Mike Richards, Nikolay Zherdev, and James van Riemsdyk. Not only do the Flyers have one of the worst power plays (8.6%) in the league but they also score among …
Flight Plan: Week of 10.24.2010
Flight Plan is a new column that will take a more in depth look at the Flyers’ upcoming opponents every week here at Flyers Faithful. After winning their home opener, the Philadelphia Flyers were absolutely abysmal in two of the three losses against teams that had played the night before. The Flyers lost in regulation against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Anaheim Ducks before exploding offensively on Saturday night against a team off to one of the hottest starts in the league in the Toronto Maple Leafs who they beat 5-2. Mike Richards notched his first …
Five questions: How will the goaltending situation play out in Philadelphia?
Flyers Faithful asked Sarah Baicker from CSN Philly, Anthony SanFilippo from the DelCo Daily Times, Geoff Detweiler from Broad Street Hockey, and our very own Nina G five questions about the ’11 Flyers’ season. We are very grateful that they took the time to share their opinions and predictions with us. Each day of this week, we will run the answers to one of those questions. Today’s question is: How will the goaltending situation play out in Philadelphia? Sarah Baicker: I still think this is the biggest question facing the Flyers this season, even though so many who watch the …
The morning after: Flyers vs. Lightning 10.14.10
“The morning after” is a review of the previous night’s Flyers’ game which, in theory, provides a more objective perspective on the game. Hey, did you hear that Simon Gagne returned to Philadelphia last night? I bet you didn’t. It sort of flew by under the radar. Like every other diehard Flyers fan, you were probably too focused on the return of the legendary Randy Jones to notice. In case you did miss the game, here is the tribute to Gagne, which originally appeared on The 700 Level: Gagne deserved the standing ovation he received but he was a non-factor on …
Flyers struck by Lightning
No matter what the outcome, Simon Gagne’s return to Philadelphia for the first time since being traded in mid-July was going to be the story of the contest. It wound up that Bolts defenseman Pavel Kubina netted the game-winning score early in the third period to back 24 saves from Dan Ellis as the Tampa Bay Lightning clipped the Philadelphia Flyers by a 3-2 count on Thursday night. Other than witnessing the sting of seeing the Flyers losing the game, the sellout crowd on South Broad Street was treated to a montage of Gagne’s best moments as a Flyer during …
Flight Plan: Week of 10.10.2010
Flight Plan is a new column that will take a more in depth look at the Flyers’ upcoming opponents every week here at Flyers Faithful. This week the Philadelphia Flyers open the same old building with yet another brand new name: The Wells Fargo Center as they are set to start a five game home stand. The Colorado Avalanche, the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Pittsburgh Penguins are all due to visit Philadelphia and try to give the Flyers their first regulation loss. Of course there have only been two games, but still, getting three out of four points on …
The morning after: Flyers @ Penguins 10.07.10
“The morning after” is a review of the previous night’s Flyers’ game which, in theory, provides a more objective perspective on the game. The Flyers have been gambling with their goaltenders for years. So, it really shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that the team decided to roll the dice and put Sergei Bobrovsky, their untested goalie prospect, in net last night against one of the most elite teams in the East, the Pittsburgh Penguins. Bobrovsky played well throughout camp and likely won the start over Brian Boucher when he played soundly in relief of Johan Backlund in a …
