It is tough to find things to like about the lockout. With no hockey to be played, players are left to go as hard (or as soft) as they please in order to maintain an NHL physique. However, this lack of games can actually be a silver lining to some of the more resilient silver foxes of the National Hockey League – if play were to resume. The end of their four-game road trip wasn’t pretty for the Flyers, as their only two points came in a shootout win against the Calgary Flames on Saturday night. With a pair of shutout losses, the Flyers have now been shut out five times this season. The Flyers hope two games against Eastern Conference teams below them in the standings will help them gain ground in a fight for home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The Flyers went 1-1-0 in their two games this past week – losing the much anticipated Winter Classic on Monday afternoon to the New York Rangers. Due to Ilya Bryzgalov’s recent struggles in net, Sergei Bobrovsky earned both starts this week stopping 54 of the 59 shots he faced. Philly, which has dropped five of their last seven games, looks to turn things around this week against the Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators. For the first time since the middle of November, the Flyers went a week where they only earned two points as they went 1-2-0 in three road games. Although the Flyers had the help of Claude Giroux and Brayden Schenn returning to the line-up, they managed to end the week with a pair of losses as they fell out of the top position in the division. At this point in time, it looks like nothing can stop the Flyers. After winning their first two games in December last week, the Flyers went 4-0-0 this week winning a pair of games on the road and a pair of games at home. With their wins this week the Flyers are currently on a six-game winning streak, their first six-game winning streak since their undefeated run from October 26-November 6 early last season. Facing two Northeast Division opponents this week before traveling west, the Flyers look to keep their winning ways intact. The Flyers won back-to-back games to start the week before dropping a Winter Classic preview on Saturday as they earned four out of a possible six points. Ilya Bryzgalov only saw 20 minutes of action this week stopping six out of a possible nine shots, while Sergei Bobrovsky provided a great relief appearance on Wednesday along with starting both of the weekend games. The Flyers may have absolutely clobbered the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night, and the Flyers may have only been a shootout goal or two away from going 3-0-0 this week, but these three games weren’t the best Flyers team we’ve seen all season. Before their Saturday night massacre against the worst team in the league, the Flyers may have played 125 minutes as well as participate in a shootout in their first two games, but they really only showed up for a total of about 20 minutes. Elias Nets Hat-Trick, Flyers Lose Second Straight

For the second straight night, the Flyers were handed a loss by a team currently not in the playoff picture as the Devils won 4-2 in Jersey. He may have not scored the game-winning goal, but Patrik Elias essentially won the game for the Devils netting a hat-trick. Brian Rolston had all three of the primary assists on Elias’s goals and Johan Hedberg made 34 saves on 36 shots to give the Devils their third win of the season against the Flyers. Every team in every sport goes through a rough patch. This week, the Flyers endured their first rough stretch of the season. Having only had a three game losing streak back in October, the Flyers had yet to really endure a losing streak similar to their recent four game slide.
