Four goaltenders were picked in the first round of the 1995 NHL Draft. Two of those goalies, J.S. Giguere and Marc Denis, never played for the Philadelphia Flyers. The other two went on to serve as the starting goaltender for Philly at one point in their careers. One of those goaltenders was Brian Boucher. The other goalie was Martin Biron. For a franchise that is known and loved for their pugilistic dominance, it’s not surprising that one of the team’s favorite players amongst the fans is a fourth-line pest that always picks on somebody bigger than him. R.J. Umberger may have been born in Pittsburgh, but some of his best memories so far in the NHL have come with the franchise located on the other side of the state. Although his first NHL game came with the Philadelphia Flyers during the 2005-06 season, Umberger was a member of two other NHL organizations before he made his way to Philly. After spending parts of six seasons in the SM-liiga, Ville Leino became a member of the Detroit Red Wings’ organization for the 2008-2009 campaign. The forward spent time with the Tampereen Ilves, HPK, and Jokerit before he spent most of his first season with the Wings’ franchise in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins. Leino saw regular season and postseason action for both the Griffins and Red Wings during 2008-2009, as he posted 46 points in 57 games with Grand Rapids and nine points in 13 tilts with Detroit. Randy Jones joined the Philadelphia Flyers’ organization for the 2003-2004 campaign. After he totaled 53 points in 68 games with Clarkson University over the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 seasons, Jones participated in a combined 60 games with the Flyers and the Philadelphia Phantoms in the season before the lost year of 2004-2005. Jones played in just five games with the Flyers during the 2003-2004 season, as he failed to record a point and was plus-1 in his stretch with the Orange and Black. A friend recently pointed out an extremely interesting survey he discovered on Reddit. The survey asked for feedback from NHL fans on how they felt about all of the other franchises throughout the league. For every franchise you could choose love, like, indifferent, dislike, or hate. The Philadelphia Flyers were able to post a win in their first game since knowing they were eliminated from playoff contention, as they beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-3 on the road tonight. Wayne Simmonds recorded his first career hat trick and added on an assist, while Matt Read had a goal and two assists in the win. Steve Mason earned the decision in the high-scoring affair, as he denied 26 of the Hurricanes’ 29 shots on net. After putting themselves in a very big hole, the Philadelphia Flyers ended this week with two emphatic wins to show that they could be a playoff team. It might be too little too late, but the Orange and Black will carry their two-game winning streak into their upcoming seven-day stretch. Flight Plan: Seven Games Left

The Philadelphia Flyers have seven games remaining in their 2013 season. Yesterday they lost to the Buffalo Sabres by a score of 1-0. They are not technically mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, but they will be this week with relative ease. Even if they win out, the Flyers would need all of the teams above them to lose just about every game. Four of the seven games on Philadelphia’s docket are this week against the Montreal Canadiens, the New York Rangers, the New Jersey Devils, and the Carolina Hurricanes.
