The Philadelphia Flyers seem to heading in the right direction after they recorded wins in their last two games. After they lost both the game and a crucial player on Friday, the Orange and Black pulled off back-to-back wins in their last two contests. The Flyers start a four-game week tomorrow, as they finish the seven-day stretch with a pair of games that start a lengthy road trip. On Friday, the Washington Capitals handed Philly a 3-2 loss at the Verizon Center. Wojtek Wolski registered the game-winner halfway through the third period, as Braden Holtby stopped 29 shots on 31 shots. …

Flyers Fall to Rangers in New York

A slow start and a series of failed special teams’ opportunities in the second period hurt the Philadelphia Flyers tonight in their 2-1 loss to the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Ryan Callahan had the eventual game-winning goal, as Henrik Lundqvist had 26 stops in the Flyers’ first loss of the season to the Rangers. The Philadelphia Flyers had an even-up week as they won two games against the New York Rangers and the Florida Panthers, and lost two games against the New Jersey Devils and the Tampa Bay Lightning. As it sits, the Flyers are owners of a 2-4-0 record with four points, which is good enough for last in the Atlantic Division. The Philadelphia Flyers had a rough start to this condensed 48-game schedule as they dropped both ends of a back-to-back over the weekend. A loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins is never fun, but despite looking flat in the first period, the Flyers really only lost by one goal as the Penguins scored an empty netter late in the third period to seal the win. During the opening weekend of the NHL season, a pair of prospects joined the Philadelphia Flyers’ roster in the team’s first two games of the 2013 campaign. The tandem of Scott Laughton, who enjoyed his first two games in the NHL, and Eric Wellwood, who registered at least one game played for the Flyers in each of the last three seasons, went pointless in the Flyers’ losses on Saturday and Sunday, but they did provide some noticeable performances. The Philadelphia Flyers suffered their second loss in 48 hours with a 5-2 defeat in Buffalo on Sunday afternoon. Thomas Vanek accrued five points on two goals and three assists in the Sabres’ first game of the 2013 season. Tyler Myers registered the game-winning goal in the third period, and Ryan Miller stopped 27-of-29 shots. For the second straight start, you couldn’t blame Ilya Bryzgalov, as he denied 36 of Buffalo’s 40 shots on net. The Philadelphia Flyers had a strong final 40 minutes, but unfortunately the first 20 cost them, as they lost their first game of the 2013 season 3-1 to the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins. James Neal had what turned out to be the game-winner just 7:20 into the contest, while Marc-Andre Fleury kept 27 of the 28 shots the Flyers threw at him out of the net.
