Minor League Update: 2/13-2/19

The Adirondack Phantoms won half of their games this week, as they ended their lengthy road losing streak in the process. After they went without a single road win in the months of December and January, the Phantoms finally earned a win away from home. Adirondack will try to climb back into the playoff picture this week, as they finish their four-game road trip before they return home on Sunday. The Phantoms extended their losing streak to four games on Tuesday night, as they dropped a 2-1 decision to the Toronto Marlies (Toronto Maple Leafs’ AHL affiliate) in overtime. Mike Zigomanis …

Tom-Sestitio-fight

Sestito lost with groin tear

More bad news on the injury front Friday afternoon, as the Philadelphia Flyers announced that enforcer Tom Sestito will have surgery to repair a torn groin muscle next week. The 24-year-old winger will miss 6-to-8 weeks, per GM Paul Holmgren. Sestito left Thursday’s game against Buffalo in the second period with what the team termed a lower-body injury. Though everyone assumed at first that it had something to do with his upper-body (i.e. hand) at first, take a look at the fight itself: Sestito is going pretty good, until he just folds up like a card table and falls to …

Giroux Leads Flyers’ Drubbing Of Sabres In Eventful Game

The Flyers scored seven goals in the final 40 minutes to overcome an early two-goal deficit, as Philly trampled the visiting Buffalo Sabres 7-2 tonight. Claude Giroux dished out a career-high five assists, while Scott Hartnell had a goal and three assists in the Flyers’ third win over the Sabres this season. Both Wayne Simmonds and Max Talbot potted a pair of goals in the win, as the Flyers turned in their highest-scoring game since their 9-2 beating of the Columbus Blue Jackets on November 5. Simmonds missed the beginning of the game due to an injury he suffered in warm-ups. After …

Leino talks about his return to Philadelphia

He literally came out of nowhere (because Peter Laviolette buried him on the bench) after the Flyers acquired him from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for unlamented defenseman Ole-Kristian Tollefsen on February 6, 2010. But Ville Leino exploded during that memorable playoff run two years ago, turning the NHL on its ear and tying Minnesota’s Dino Ciccarelli for the highest point total by a rookie in the Stanley Cup playoffs with 21 (7G, 14A) in just 19 games as Philly came up short against Chicago. He continued to make the opposition take notice with a 19-goal, 54-point campaign last …

Atlantic Watch: 2/8-2/14

The Flyers managed to hold on for a one-goal win Thursday before they dropped both of their games on the weekend to go 1-2-0 this week. The win was the Flyers’ second since the All-Star break, as they are 2-4-2 since the break with both wins coming at home. Philly looks forward to two games against Eastern Conference teams outside the playoff picture in the next few days, as well as a meeting with the Penguins to determine crucial points in the standings. On Thursday, Brayden Schenn potted the game-winner in the second period to give the Flyers just enough …

3-on-3 Weekly Update: 02.14.12

Welcome to this week’s edition of 3-on -3, where we look back at the week that was for the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers are coming off a very tough week, going 1-2-1 in four games, but losing two big tests against the Rangers and Red Wings. The three points the Flyers captured was just enough to keep the Orange and Black in fourth place in the Eastern Conference.  Let’s get to this week’s 3 “hot” and 3 “not” players of the week. 3”Hot”: Brayden Schenn: The 20-year-old former first round pick of the LA Kings had a good week racking …

Wings Extend Streak To 20 At Home, Flyers Lose 4-3 In Detroit

Johan Franzen broke the tie early in the third period to give the Detroit Red Wings a 4-3 lead over the visiting Philadelphia Flyers, which they held on to for their 20th straight home win. “The Mule” potted his league-leading 10th game-winning goal and 22nd goal of the season in the first minute of the third period, as Joey MacDonald earned his third straight win at home with a 26-save performance. The play that led to Franzen’s goal started with a slap-pass from Ian White at the point. White’s pass moved through the slot to Nicklas Lidstrom, who touched the puck back across the …

Atlantic Watch: 2/1-2/7

After a dominant victory on Thursday against one of the hotter teams in the league, the Flyers proceeded to drop their next handful of games to suffer their first three-game losing streak of the season. Poor starts and poor goaltending hurt the Flyers over the weekend, as the only other point they gained this week was from last night’s shootout loss. Hopefully for Philly, their play turns around, as they face three tough opponents over the next seven days. On Thursday, the Flyers handed the Nashville Predators a 4-1 loss in Philadelphia. Matt Read had the game-winner in the second …

Atlantic Watch: 1/25-1/31

In their only game this week, the Flyers took part in yet another shootout. Unfortunately for Philly, it was unable to pull out a win. The Orange and Black did, however, keep up with the Rangers, who also lost in a shootout this week. The Flyers look forward to a difficult week ahead, as three of their four opponents are currently in the playoff picture. For a third time this season, the Flyers lost to the Winnipeg Jets. This time, however, the game was very defensive, as the Jets picked up a 2-1 shootout win in Philadelphia on Tuesday night. Chris …

Minor League Update: 1/23-1/29

With a trio of losses this week, the Adirondack Phantoms extended their losing streak to five games. Over their five-game losing streak, the Phantoms have been out scored 20-7, as the team has suffered two four-goal losses. The Phantoms hope the AHL’s All-Star break will end their misery as of late, as they have a three-game home stand over the next several days. For their third straight loss, the Phantoms dropped a 5-1 decision at the Verizon Wireless Arena to the Manchester Monarchs (Los Angeles Kings’ AHL affiliate) on Wednesday night. Jordan Nolan posted the game-winner 11:31 into the middle stanza …
