After a four game home stand which saw them earn seven of a possible eight points, the Philadelphia Flyers start a five game road trip Monday night. This week, the Flyers’ schedule has them doubled up on back-to-backs as they take on the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Winnipeg Jets, the New Jersey Devils, and the Montreal Canadiens. The Flyers managed to hold on for a one-goal win Thursday before they dropped both of their games on the weekend to go 1-2-0 this week. The win was the Flyers’ second since the All-Star break, as they are 2-4-2 since the break with both wins coming at home. Philly looks forward to two games against Eastern Conference teams outside the playoff picture in the next few days, as well as a meeting with the Penguins to determine crucial points in the standings. After a dominant victory on Thursday against one of the hotter teams in the league, the Flyers proceeded to drop their next handful of games to suffer their first three-game losing streak of the season. Poor starts and poor goaltending hurt the Flyers over the weekend, as the only other point they gained this week was from last night’s shootout loss. Hopefully for Philly, their play turns around, as they face three tough opponents over the next seven days. On Thursday, the Flyers handed the Nashville Predators a 4-1 loss in Philadelphia. In their only game this week, the Flyers took part in yet another shootout. Unfortunately for Philly, it was unable to pull out a win. The Orange and Black did, however, keep up with the Rangers, who also lost in a shootout this week. The Flyers look forward to a difficult week ahead, as three of their four opponents are currently in the playoff picture. For a third time this season, the Flyers lost to the Winnipeg Jets. Continuing their strong month of December, thePhiladelphia Flyers soldiered on despite more depressing injury news, winning their seventh straight game with a 4-3 triumph on the road over the Montreal Canadiens tonight. Andrej Meszaros scored his third goal of the season in the first half of the third period to earn his second-game winner of the season. Sergei Bobrovsky saved 28 shots in the win, and Matt Carle led all skaters in points for the game with three assists. The Philadelphia Flyers have now won five games in a row and are sitting atop the Eastern Conference standings with 39 points and 101 goals scored, being the first team in the NHL to reach 100 goals this season. Peter Laviolette’s club has overcome a lot of criticism and adversity through these first 28 games to get to this point, but they may have to push forward without two more of their best players in Claude Giroux and Ilya Bryzgalov.
