Benchmarking some ’11 predictions

We were too new and too disorganized to assemble a preview of the 2011 NHL season worth reading. However, we made sporadic predictions on our site and participated in Freeze the Puck’s Atlantic Division Preview. So, we’ll aggregate some of those predictions here and benchmark our results. Prediction #1: Breakout stars Atlantic Division: I’m going to pick Claude Giroux. He’s been a slow starter over the last few seasons but he also hasn’t had wingers that could keep up with him on his line. Claude Giroux is only two goals shy of tying his career high of 16 goals. He …

A show of hands

Who thinks Chris Pronger was guilty of infringing the “Avery rule“? OK, put your hands back down. It doesn’t really matter. This penalty is not the reason why the Flyers lost. The team played poorly. The special teams did not show up tonight and the lackadaisical play hurt them. The Flyers gave up a shorthanded goal but couldn’t score on a 5-on-3 powerplay. Nonetheless, the refs directly took a point away from the Flyers. It’s undeniable. Pronger waved his hand in the air. He may have been directing traffic or he may have been blocking Mikka Kiprusoff’s view. The truth …

Flight Plan Week of 11.14.2010

Flight Plan is a new column that will take a more in depth look at the Flyers’ upcoming opponents every week here at Flyers Faithful. The Flyers are playing a similar brand to the type of hockey they were playing when they started the Stanley Cup Playoffs last year. They worked hard, scored key goals, got contributions from different players every night. They rolled with that style right on through to the Stanley Cup Finals and came within just two victories of ending a 35 year drought. The entire team was firing on all cylinders last year and right now, …

The morning after: Islanders @ Flyers 10.30.10

“The morning after” is a review of the previous night’s Flyers’ game which, in theory, provides a more objective perspective on the game. I think of the Islanders as a measuring stick for your team.  Meaning if your team loses to the Islanders, they suck and will end up being moved to Las Vegas.  If your team wins, then they get two points.  Good deal, huh? This was the Flyers Halloween game, and there were some frightful things going on in this game.  Chief among them: Rick DiPietro’s pads (although for a good cause) and, oh yeah, his play.  I …
