Wearing the “C” and its fabricated importance

With Claude Giroux mired in his 21 game goalless drought prior to snapping it against Edmonton on Saturday, and the Flyers in the cellar of the Metropolitan division, many people began to question Claude Giroux as captain. I’m here to tell you…just stop. Please. Fans and media alike have glamorized the Captain in hockey. As if wearing a “C” on the jersey grants its wearer the supernatural ability to drag his team forward, or if he’s not worthy, send them plummeting far from contention. A locker room is comprised (or should be) of many leaders; not just a single person. …

Flyers’ Offense Comes to Life Against Edmonton, Leads Team to 4-2 Win Over Oilers

Claude Giroux finally busted out of his 15-game goal drought and the Flyers’ offense came to life against Edmonton, leading them to a 4-2 final against the Oilers on Saturday afternoon. Jay Rosehill, Scott Hartnell, and Vinny Lecavalier also scored for the orange & black, while David Perron and Taylor Hall got the tallies for Edmonton. The afternoon’s matchup pitted the NHL’s worst offensive team against its worst defensive team, which… didn’t sound promising for either side. However, the Flyers, who were held scoreless in their last game (Thursday at New Jersey), opened up the scoring first, with a nice …

Game 16 Preview: Edmonton Oilers @ Philadelphia Flyers

Edmonton Oilers (4-11-2) @ Philadelphia Flyers (4-10-1), 1:00pm, NHL Network/CSN-Philly Well, a meeting between the second-worst and third-worst teams in the NHL took an interesting turn on Friday. After a day filled with several trade rumors between the two clubs, the Edmonton Oilers signed a recently released Philadelphia Flyer that was at least entertaining, if not productive on the ice, as the Western Conference club signed Ilya Bryzgalov. It seemed as though it was only a matter of time before a club reached out to the former Philly goaltending character. Ironically, the team that did so signed Bryzgalov the day …

Reactions to reactions

There’s a lot of rumors and opinions going around regarding the Flyers right now and, well, to cut to the chase, I’m going to throw my hat into the ring too. The idea that Giroux would in any way benefit from being stripped of the C for reasons similar to Lecavalier’s youthful inexperience is of course ludicrous. -Ryan Lambert Sure, Claude Giroux (24) is not as young as Vinny Lecavalier (20) was when he was stripped of his captaincy but there are other, legitimate reasons to remove the C from Giroux’s jersey. Playing in a major market — especially one …

The Burden

A pox, a pox, I say to thee it is a pox! The curse of Clarkie shall strike whoever shall don that damned C for the Flyers of Philadelphia! If we can lift it. IF! Then, our magical Ginger will return to his scoring ways. But if we can not, than the net shall remain empty. The C’s weight holds him back, and only the C’s weight. Certainly not injuries, or impure wingers. Alas, Claude, alas. We are lost without the true thee. Perhaps the pox can be placed on the shoulders of Vincent the Cavalier. He is indeed a …
