With Free Agency approaching, let’s discuss Holmgren Economics

It’s rare in today’s sports world, and especially in the world of the Philadelphia Flyers, for the general population to agree on something. Let’s face it, more often than not the topic at hand tends to be polarizing. People rarely sit in the middle with indifference. You have your lovers, and you have your haters. Whether you’re discussing Matt Carle, Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, a goaltending carousel, or if a particular trade rumor would be beneficial, there’s usually a clear divide among the masses. Paul Holmgren is no exception in this regard. I’ll preface this article by saying if you …

Point/Counterpoint: Trade deadline moves

Point: Tweak the roster By Steve J The Flyers miss the hell out of Chris Pronger.  You know it, I know it, Trent Klatt knows it.  The trade rumors that have circulated for the past couple of months have revolved around the defense.  Ryan Suter, Shea Weber, Tim Gleason, and Luke Schenn’s names have been floated as potential candidates.  The cost for most of these guys would be at least one young forward, which happens to be the Flyers’ greatest asset.  Well, in the words of the immortal sage Admiral Ackbar, it’s a trap! It is absolutely not worth it …

Was trading for Bryzgalov’s rights a worthwhile risk?

To answer this question, we must first ask another one: What benefits are there to trading for the rights of a pending unrestricted free agent? Ideally, negotiating rights will allow you work out a reasonable deal before a player hits free agency. If this is the intent of a general manager, then he had better be sure that the player is willing to take a discount to sign now in lieu of testing the market. Also, he should be sure that the player wants to play in that city. In the case of Ilya Bryzgalov, his actions suggest that he …

Flyers acquire rights to Bryzgalov

The Flyers confirmed that the Flyers have traded prospect Matt Clackson, a 2012 3rd round draft pick, and future considerations to Phoenix for the rights to goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov. Bryzgalov is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. The Flyers have until then to try to sign him. In 2010, the Flyers acquired Dan Hamhuis from Nashville for a conditional draft pick but failed to sign him. His rights were then traded to Pittsburgh but, ultimately, he signed with the Vancouver Canucks. In 2007, the Flyers traded a first round draft pick for the rights to Kimmo …

An open letter to Paul Holmgren

Dear Paul, We’ve had our differences in the past. The lack of value you see in draft picks and prospects worries me. Your willingness to give picks away in trade, and hand out no trade clauses like candy  was mystifying at one point, but now I have become numb to it. Additionally, the idea of putting all of your eggs in one basket, like you did this season, is far from an approach I prefer take. There’s still no guarantee that you’ll win the Stanley Cup, as we saw, and now we’re left in the same spot where we always seem to …

Flight Plan week of 12.26.2010

‘Tis the season for road trips as the Flyers head out west on their annual post-Christmas visit to the other conference and try to regain the top spot in the NHL after losing it to Pittsburgh as they remained idle during the Penguins’ last two games. The Penguins hold just a one point lead over the Flyers and the Fly guys have two games in hand as they’ve played 35 to Pittsburgh’s 37.  The Flyers obviously would love to forget what happened a week ago at home, but alas, they would do well not to as they got smoked in …

Hamhuis is in. So, who’s out?

The Flyers traded defenseman RFA Ryan Parent to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Dan Hamhuis, who is set to become a free agent on July 1. Parent, a former first round pick of the Predators, suffered a rash of injuries and never lived up to his potential in Philadelphia. Though the Flyers have not signed — or, at least, announced — a new contract with the physical defender, it’s reasonable to assume they will do so. As pointed out on Twitter by Greg Wyshynski, of Puck Daddy fame, it was 3 years and 1 day ago that the Flyers …
