Flight Plan: Final Week

Some years just do not go your way. This was the case for the 2013 Philadelphia Flyers. In a shortened year, the team couldn’t quite get their bearings early on, took a ton of injuries to key personnel, and never gained any footing as they struggled nearly the entire year to string together a winning streak or to meet the .500 mark. As such, they will not make the playoffs for the first time since 2007. This final week, the Flyers are set to take on the Boston Bruins, the New York Islanders, and the Ottawa Senators. Flight Plan: Playoffs Still Within Reach

The Philadelphia Flyers took a four game win streak, their first of the season, into Winnipeg yesterday. They scored the first goal and, after a few shaky minutes at the beginning of the first period, completely took over registering 13 shots in the primary stanza, limiting the Jets to just four through 20 minutes of play. Winnipeg roared out of the gates in the second and notched four goals on just 12 shots, while Philadelphia could only muster five all period. Newly acquired backup goaltender Steve Mason saw his first action as a Flyer, stopping all seven shots he faced …

Atlantic Watch: Rangers on Winning Streak, Islanders on Point Streak, Devils Need Brodeur, Players Lost on Waivers

The Philadelphia Flyers started the week with a pair of wins, but ended the seven-day stretch on a sour note with a frustrating loss in New York last night. The Orange and Black need to grab some points this week, as two of their three contests over the next seven days are against the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Boston Bruins. Philly started the week with a 4-1 win over the Washington Capitals at the Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday. Claude Giroux scored just 23 seconds in and Wayne Simmonds converted on a power-play chance a little over four minutes into …

The Philadelphia Flyers went 3-1-0 this week, capping off a six-game road trip with a win over the Pittsburgh Penguins by a score of 6-5. They lost the back-to-back game with the Florida Panthers, but beat the Winnipeg Jets, 5-3. More importantly, the Flyers are now in eighth place in the Eastern Conference with 20 points and play their next three games at home, where their record is 5-2-1. This week the Orange and Black will host James van Riemsdyk and the Toronto Maple Leafs, Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals, and Daniel Alfredsson and the Ottawa Senators. Get your …

Atlantic Watch: Flyers Respond to Giroux, Penguins’ Three-Game Winning Streak, Rangers and Islanders Deal With Injuries

Although the Philadelphia Flyers lost two of their three games this week, the Orange and Black finished the week with a resounding 7-0 victory over a divisional opponent. Philly will look to gain ground in the Eastern Conference this week with four games over the next seven days, one of which is against the Pittsburgh Penguins and another two against a pair of the teams at the bottom of the standings. The Flyers started the week with a 5-3 defeat on Friday to the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center. Travis Zajac opened the scoring with his third of …

Spezza, Alfredsson Lead Sens To Shootout Win In Philly

Despite a three-goal deficit after the first 20 minutes, the Flyers were still able to earn a point in their 4-3 shootout loss to the Ottawa Senators on Saturday afternoon. After Philly scored three goals in the second period to tie the game, the Sens won the shootout thanks to goals from Milan Michalek and Jason Spezza. Spezza, Daniel Alfredsson and Chris Neil tallied for the Senators, who moved four points ahead of eighth-place Washington. Craig Anderson turned in a superb performance, making 36 saves and rescuing his club from the prospect of taking only one point away. “Our team …

Atlantic Watch: 3/21-3/27

In their three home games this week, the Flyers were able to clinch a playoff spot with a pair of wins over teams currently sitting outside the postseason scenario. Unfortunately, Ilya Bryzgalov suffered a chip fracture in his right foot. Hopefully for Philly, Bryzgalov will be back by the end of next week when the club takes on the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers as part of their four-game schedule over the next few days. On Thursday, the Orange and Black earned two points against the Washington Capitals with a 2-1 shootout win at the Wells Fargo Center. Wayne Simmonds potted …

Kuba Scores Late, Senators Beat Flyers 6-4

After a dramatic overtime victory in Philly yesterday, the Flyers failed to sweep their home-and-home with the Ottawa Senators as they dropped a 6-4 decision on the road Sunday evening. Filip Kuba scored on a slapshot from the point with 71 seconds left in the game for the winner as Daniel Alfredsson, Chris Neil, Erik Karlsson, and Nick Foligno each recorded a goal and assist in the Senators’ win. Matt Read was the only Flyer with a multi-point game as he scored in the second period and assisted on Sean Couturier’s goal in the first period. Read tied Ryan Nugent-Hopkins for the NHL …

Atlantic Watch: 12/28-1/3

The Flyers went 1-1-0 in their two games this past week – losing the much anticipated Winter Classic on Monday afternoon to the New York Rangers. Due to Ilya Bryzgalov’s recent struggles in net, Sergei Bobrovsky earned both starts this week stopping 54 of the 59 shots he faced. Philly, which has dropped five of their last seven games, looks to turn things around this week against the Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators. The Orange and Black continued their dominance over the Pittsburgh Penguins in the CONSOL Energy Center with a 4-2 victory on Thursday night. Matt Read earned his third …
