The Philadelphia Flyers returned to home ice on Tuesday night and five different players recorded a goal in their 5-1 rout of the visiting Minnesota Wild. Braydon Coburn netted the game-winning goal in the middle of the second period, while Matt Read and Jaromir Jagr were the only players who had multi-point performances with two-assist games. Ilya Bryzgalov, newly christened as the Number One goaltender, came through and won his third straight home game with a 25-save effort, as the Flyers recorded their first multi-goal victory in 2012. Shortly after the game’s opening faceoff, Philly drew the game’s first power play 1:14 in when Matt …
Reevaluating (New Year and such)
I sit here with my cup of coffee (diluted with peppermint mocha creamer cause that’s how I roll) and look at my calendar that shows December with an old-fashioned painting of a hockey scene (gift from my dad last Christmas). Next to me is the 2012 calendar, this time with photos of the Flyers. It’s weird enough that Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, and Darroll Powe are all taking space in said calendar, but as I still like all three of them and miss them to some extent, I don’t mind. It’s almost a new year. 2012 supposedly will bring the …
Read Provides Unique Game-Winner as Philly Beats Florida 3-2
The Flyers leave the state of Florida on a positive note tonight as they beat the Panthers 3-2. Matt Read recorded his first game-winning goal in the NHL with a rarity: a short-handed, penalty-shot goal in the third period, while Braydon Coburn registered his first goal of the season. Ilya Bryzgalov had a 31-save evening with his only errors coming from a goal off an awkward deflection and a goal with nearly no time left in the game. Despite being out shot 16-9 in the final twenty minutes of regulation, the Flyers held on for the win. In an opening period which featured five …
Putting some of the roster changes in perspective
In order to make sense of the destruction left in the wake of Hurricane Holmgren, we need to compare these roster changes to a version of the 2010 Flyers and see how those parts changed. Here is a look at that the forwards from team: Gagne – Richards – Carter Hartnell – Briere – Leino JvR – Giroux – Asham Carcillo/Powe – Betts – Laperriere So, what’s different? A lot, on paper. Here’s my attempt at projecting the 2012 offensive lines, barring any other changes: JvR – Giroux – Voracek Hartnell – Briere – Jagr Nodl – Schenn – Simmonds …
Nodl and Sestito signed, Powe traded
The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have come to terms with forwards Andreas Nodl and Tom Sestito. Per Bob McKenzie, Nodl’s contract is a two year deal worth $845k per year, a dip from the his entry-level deal worth $850k per year. However, his previous contract included about $115k in bonuses. The terms of Sestito’s deal have not been announced. ___ In a surprising move, the Flyers dealt center and penalty killer, Darroll Powe, to the Minnesota Wild for a 3rd round draft pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
Bring Back Gagne? A look at the pros and cons.
We have 25 days until free agency and I’m sure each and every one of those days will be rumor laden until July 1 arrives. Paul Holmgren was fairly active last season, adding Andrej Meszaros, Sean O’Donnell, Jody Shelley and Nikolay Zherdev, while retaining Darroll Powe and Daniel Carcillo. However all of that activity caused casualties of the cap. Arron Asham signed with Pittsburgh as a free agent and Simon Gagne, the longest- tenured Flyer at the time, waived his no-trade clause in a much maligned deal with Tampa Bay, while we took on Matt Walker — or more precisely, his two hip surgeries. …
Flyers Drop Fifth Straight To Buffalo In Overtime
Eight days into April and the Flyers are still looking for their first win of the month after Thomas Vanek scored an overtime goal to give Buffalo a 4-3 win. Nathan Gerbe netted two as Ryan Miller stepped in for Jhonas Enroth to start the third period as the Flyers dropped their fifth straight game. Both Scott Hartnell and Danny Briere had a goal and an assist in the loss as Sergei Bobrovsky made 25 saves on 29 shots. For the fourth straight game the Flyers scored the opening goal. This time, it was a one-timer from Scott Hartnell that …
Looking ahead: A few thoughts on the offseason
Numbers Current Projected Cap Space for 2012: $1,980,845 [source] Projected Cap Increase for 2012: $3,000,000 [source] Total Projected Cap Space for 2012: $4,980,845 Notable Pending UFA forwards: VIlle Leino, Nikolay Zherdev Notable Pending RFA forwards: Andreas Nodl, Darroll Powe, Dan Carcillo Notable Pending UFA defensemen: Sean O’Donnell, Nick Boynton Notable Pending RFA defensemen: Danny Syvret Notable Pending UFA goaltenders: Brian Boucher Thoughts Defense It’s likely the Flyers won’t need anything more than a third pairing defensemen. They have a number of options available to them: Re-sign O’Donnell or Boynton, play Matt Walker, promote Erik Gustafsson, or re-up Danny Syvret and …
Flyers Beat Desperate Leafs 3-2
Visiting a desperate Toronto team, the Flyers were able to beat the Maple Leafs 3-2 tonight. Claude Giroux had a goal and an assist helping the Flyers win their second straight game after dropping four straight. The win improves the Flyers’ record to 42-19-6. A flaw of the Flyers game as a whole is the powerplay. Last game against Edmonton, a Jeff Carter tally was the only goal registered on a five minute advantage during the opening period. Tonight, Mike Komisarek received a, what some might call a questionable, five minute major for boarding Daniel Carcillo just before the four minute mark in the …
RICE & MICE: Is it really the Flu?
“A team without energy, if the physical part is there, the mental part goes, and there was just nothing yesterday. I think we were drained. To get a day off, even though it’s under the toughest of circumstances and a tough loss like that, I really feel that the benefits will be seen on Tuesday by not having to mentally and physically come in to the rink.” The comments above are those of Peter Laviolette when asked about his decision to give his team the day off following their 7-0 defeat at the hands of the New York Rangers. He …
