Flyers Lose On Boyce’s Late Goal

Facing a team hungry for a playoff spot, the Flyers lacked urgency late in the third period leading to their 3-2 defeat against the Toronto Maple Leafs this evening. In a play resulting from hard work in the corner, Darryl Boyce scored the game-winning goal for Toronto with under five minutes to play in regulation. Kris Versteeg netted a pair of goals in a losing effort for the Flyers, while Mike Richards assisted on both tallies. The loss drops Philly to 40-17-6. The Flyers were able to strike first after dominating the early play. Chris Pronger — who returned from …

A Reasoner to Believe

That’s what it read at the top of the special insert, tucked within the tabloid-sized issue of The Heights, in mid-April of 1998. A plea for the Eagles’ best player to return for his senior season in the wake of a national championship game appearance, it depicted Marty Reasoner, clad in the Boston College home whites, waiting out a stoppage in play. It could have been from any game that season, but it was most likely taken in the 3 1/2 week period between the Hockey East quarterfinal round in early March and the NCAA Tournament Final, in Boston, on the …

Atlantic Watch: 2/2-2/9

With only two games since last Wednesday, the Flyers had the lightest work week of any team in the Atlantic Division. Since both of those games were against Western Conference teams, the schedule didn’t feature any intense divisional games as well. Nonetheless Philly went 2-0-0 on the week notching wins against the Nashville Predators on Thursday and Dallas Stars on Saturday. Ville Leino’s first two-goal game in the NHL led the Flyers to victory Thursday beating the Predators 3-2. Both of Leino’s goals came in the 3rd period, including a spin-o-rama goal from the slot with about three minutes left in regulation as the game …

Powe and Meszaros Score, Flyers Win 3-1

Goals from unexpected sources and strong goaltending helped the Flyers beat the visiting Dallas Stars 3-1 on Saturday night, in the first of two meetings this season. Andrej Meszaros opened the scoring with a late first period goal and Darroll Powe netted a shorthanded goal early in the second period that ended up being the game winning tally. After a garbage goal by Brenden Morrow later in the period, Jeff Carter scored the lone goal of the third period to put the game away for Philly. The win is the Flyers’ second in a row and eighth in 10, and …

Five Questions: What moves do the Flyers need to make, if any, at the deadline?

Flyers Faithful asked Dustin Leed from The Fourth Period and The Hockey Guys, Stephen Whyno from Philly Sports Daily, David Strehle from NHL Hot Stove, and our very own Nick D five questions about the ’11 Flyers’ season. We are very grateful that they took the time to share their opinions and predictions with us. Each day of this week, we will run the answers to one of those questions. Today’s question is: What moves do the Flyers need to make, if any, at the deadline? Dustin Leed: I think the Flyers need a depth winger who can play up and down the line-up. Preferably a …

The morning after: Senators @ Flyers 11.15.10

“The morning after” is a review of the previous night’s Flyers’ game which, in theory, provides a more objective perspective on the game. So the Flyers seem to be playing pretty dominant hockey lately, eh?  The schedule looks tough this week, and it will be a good test for the team.  Not multiple choice, but one of those essay ones that you have to write in those blue books. This game was touted a clash of two of the hottest teams in the league right now.  And the Flyers dominated.  The game started slowly, with a bit of feeling-out in the beginning …

The morning after: Flyers @ Sabres 10.26.10

“The morning after” is a review of the previous night’s Flyers’ game which, in theory, provides a more objective perspective on the game. Given how the ’11 season started, there were many abnormalities to last night’s victory over the Buffalo Sabres: The power play potted three goals, equaling the total of PP goals they scored coming into last night’s game. The offense was potent. The enigma wrapped in a jersey hidden behind a tinted visor that is Nikolay Zherdev scored his second goal of the season. The Flyers came out flying in the second period. The snakebitten energy generators, Darroll …

The morning after: Flyers vs. Ducks 10.21.10

“The morning after” is a review of the previous night’s Flyers’ game which, in theory, provides a more objective perspective on the game. In the four days that the Flyers were off, players were bag skated, the team worked on the power play, and they had plenty of time to rest so that they could come out hard against the Anaheim Ducks, a team that stumbled out of the gate this season. Much like the game against the Pittsburgh Penguins this past Saturday, this win was there for the taking and the Flyers did not grab it. Instead, they dropped …

Flyers top Devils in SO; successful preseason debut

Mike Richards tallied the game-winner and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped the Devils’ final chance in the fourth round of the shootout as Philadelphia topped New Jersey, 4-3, in the preseason opener for both clubs. Darroll Powe and Jeff Carter tallied in the first period and Danny Briere notched the game-tying goal in the third period for the Flyers, who are coming off a Stanley Cup appearance. Michael Leighton played two periods and allowed three goals on 23 shots, while Bobrovsky halted all seven he faced in the third period and overtime. He fended off a shot from Jacob Josefson to lock …
