2013 Year in Review: Bruno Gervais

At the start of a season all players, from pee-wee all the way up to the pros, are looking to improve themselves.  Becoming better than the year before is essential for success, especially in the National Hockey League, where each and every offseason every team is adding new talent, working out harder and training to make themselves better. In the case of Bruno Gervais, he did the exact opposite. I’m not quite sure what Paul Holmgren thought he was going to get when he signed the 28-year old defenseman who wasn’t good enough to be kept around by either the …

Flyers face decisions with crowded blueline…again

So I sit down to begin this article, and I write the headline “Flyers face decisions with crowded blueline” and then I think to myself… “wait, didn’t I write something similar last summer”. Of course I go take a look and, sure enough, I did. I wrote almost the same exact article last summer that I am about to begin now. It’s the same story, with different players, and some slightly different circumstances. The major difference is timing. Breaking down the Bullies: Low-scoring losses downed the Flyers

With just five games left, the Flyers’ 2013 season has been marred by inconsistency on every inch of the ice. On the surface, it felt particularly frustrating from an offensive standpoint. What appeared on paper to be a roster full of talented, budding forwards was coming up short on a nightly basis for no real reason at all, just one season removed from tormenting its opponents. Now that the year is coming to a close, the Flyers have suddenly begun to find ways to light the lamp, compiling back to back wins while scoring eleven goals in the process. They …

Gervais out indefinitely with stomach issue

INJURY UPDATE: #Flyers D Bruno Gervais is out indefinitely & will have surgery Thurs. to repair a torn stomach muscle bit.ly/9UNv1R — Philadelphia Flyers (@NHLFlyers) April 16, 2013 Gervais was scratched from the lineup on Monday against the Montreal Canadiens after only skating for a few minutes in warm-ups.  He will undergo surgery this Thursday to repair a torn stomach muscle. With a defense that is already thin, this injury only adds problems for Flyers, thus they have recalled defensemen Matt Konan and Brandon Manning …

Breaking Down the Bullies: Poor Coverage on the Point

This past week brought about more of the same for the Flyers: mind-numbing inconsistency. After providing some hope with a little streak of 4-1-1, the team proceeded to drop two crucial contests against currently superior Eastern Conference foes New Jersey and Montreal before flipping the script and dominating the New York Islanders. Now, the Flyers sit on the cusp of the playoffs, looking ahead at yet another opportunity to make up some ground after a tough task in Pittsburgh. Since a seven-goal margin of victory is unsustainable, how can the Flyers continue to stay in the win column with less …
