Titans keep late-season surge going, beat Royals

Kory Nagy and Shane Harper each collected a pair of goals, Scott Wedgewood made 25 saves and the Trenton Titans dodged a key two-man disadvantage in the third period en route to a 6-4 win over the Reading Royals on Thursday night — the 15th and final meeting between the clubs. Mike Ullrich and Jesse Todd also scored, while Blake Kessel chipped in three assists for the Titans (31-31-8), who continued their late-season success with their fourth straight win and fifth in their last seven. Kirk MacDonald returned from the reserve list to open the scoring just 15 seconds in, …

Reading Redux: Gill once again named top goalie in ECHL

Riley Gill is on quite a streak backstopping the Reading Royals — the top overall seed in the Eastern Conference. Following in the footsteps and crease markings of Philipp Grubauer, all he’s done is post a 10-2-0 record with three shutouts, a 1.18 goals-against average and save percentage of .955 in 12 games with the Atlantic Division champions this season. Part of his success is his stinginess: allowing two goals or less in 11 of his 12 appearances. So, it’s no surprise that for the second consecutive week, Gill was selected as the top goaltender in the ECHL. The 28-year-old …

Future Flyers Report: Kyle Flanagan earns tryout, Shane Harper has big weekend, prospects in NCAA tournament, updates on OHL/WHL playoffs

Earlier this week the Philadelphia Flyers’ organization signed Kyle Flanagan, a forward that recently completed his senior year at St. Lawrence University, to a one-year entry-level contract. The 24-year-old, who finished second on St. Lawrence’s squad with 47 points in 35 games and was named a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, will join the Adirondack Phantoms on an amateur tryout contract for the remainder of the 2012-2013 regular season. In his first two games with Adirondack Flanagan had two helpers. In the ECHL, forward Shane Harper had a weekend to remember, as he helped the Trenton Titans go 3-0-0 while …

Harper, Cepis help Titans dominate Nailers for second straight day

It was fan appreciation night at the Sun National Bank Center last night and the Trenton Titans showed their appreciation by putting a 7-2 shellacking on the Wheeling Nailers. Shane Harper recorded his second hat trick in as many days on his way to a five-point game, as Jacob Cepis posted four assists in a six-point performance for the Titans’ second blowout win in a 48-hour span over the Nailers. Blake Kessel also had a big night for the hosts, as he had a trio of assists. “They’re going in for me right now,” Harper said after the win. “I feel …

Titans whip Nailers behind Harper, Cepis

Shane Harper picked up a pair of goals in the game’s first six minutes en route to his first career hat trick, while Jacob Cepis finished with a goal and two assists as the Trenton Titans made short work of the Wheeling Nailers, 5-2, on Friday night. “I’ve played a few strong games while I was here. I wasn’t getting the bounces but today I guess they were going in. Things just went right,” Harper admitted. “I had one job; to play as hard as I could, and put points on the board and get my confidence up. It’s my …

Titans captain done for season

Andy Bohmbach endured a concussion, multiple American Hockey League call-ups that went nowhere, and near-constant roster upheaval, but always held it down this year as the heart, soul and captain of the Trenton Titans. His season is done. Per Mike Ashmore of the Trentonian, Bohmbach was placed on the 21-day injured reserve list by the club on Wednesday, stripping the struggling team of their best player for the final games of the regular season. The report is he’ll need shoulder surgery. Trenton is in action later tonight in Elmira, in the club’s final matchup this year, then will come home …

Reading’s Gill named ECHL’s top goaltender

Stepping into the shoes of Philipp Grubauer, who aided the Royals in their ascension to the top of the Eastern Conference before leaving for Hershey and the Capitals, hasn’t been easy for whomever spent time in the Reading crease in the second half of this season. Nonetheless, with Larry Courville’s club vying for the Brabham Cup and best record in the ECHL, Riley Gill has filled the vacancy beyond all expectations. On Tuesday, he was named the league’s top goalie for the week of March 11-17. The 28-year-old Minnesota native finished 3-0-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average and a .969 …

Atlantic Watch: Rangers on Winning Streak, Islanders on Point Streak, Devils Need Brodeur, Players Lost on Waivers

The Philadelphia Flyers started the week with a pair of wins, but ended the seven-day stretch on a sour note with a frustrating loss in New York last night. The Orange and Black need to grab some points this week, as two of their three contests over the next seven days are against the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Boston Bruins. Philly started the week with a 4-1 win over the Washington Capitals at the Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday. Claude Giroux scored just 23 seconds in and Wayne Simmonds converted on a power-play chance a little over four minutes into …
