The Philadelphia Flyers have made some noise lately with a few transactions. In addition to signing blue liner Kurtis Foster, the Orange and Black completed a deal with the Carolina Hurricanes where they received former Flyer Brian Boucher. In addition to Boosh, Philly was dealt defensive prospect Mark Alt. The pair was exchanged for forward prospect Luke Pither. Since most Flyers’ fans are aware of what Boucher brings to the table, many are curious as to what Alt can do. The first full night of games following mass call-ups due to the end of the NHL lockout have passed in the ECHL, and the Trenton Titans opened up a two-game home series on Friday night playing like they were trying to figure out just how to deal with the sudden upheaval. So were the South Carolina Stingrays (17-18-4), but the visitors managed to come up two goals better in a 3-1 decision in New Jersey’s capital. The Trenton Titans’ two-game skid turned into a five-game losing streak this week, as the squad dropped all three games on their schedule with a record of 0-2-1. Just as the Flyers’ ECHL affiliate gained a lot of ground in the Eastern Conference with a winning streak a few weeks ago, the team dropped right out of the playoff picture with a losing streak, as Trenton sits 12th in the conference at the moment. Adam Oates entered the league quietly and left the league just the same, but the former center was rewarded for his playing career recently when he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. After he joined the Detroit Red Wings during the 1985-1986 season as an undrafted free agent out of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Oates went on to finish 16th on the all-time points list with 1,420. Known as one of the game’s greatest playmakers, Oates finished sixth on the all-time NHL assists list with 1,079, which is more than Gordie Howe and Mario Lemieux. Oates was one of …

Noebels Named ECHL All-Star

Marcel Noebels is the Trenton Titans’ lone representative at the 2013 ECHL All-Star Game, which will be a contest between the ECHL All-Stars and the Colorado Eagles on Wednesday, January 23 in Loveland, Colorado. The Philadelphia Flyers’ fourth-round selection in 2011 is one of nine rookies to be selected to this year’s All-Star squad. Noebels is currently second on the Titans with 30 points, as the first-year professional has 11 goals and 19 helpers in 31 games for the Flyers’ affiliate this year. Shane Harper signed an entry-level contract with the Philadelphia Flyers in March of 2010 after an impressive season with the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League. After he potted 42 goals, an Everett Silvertips record for most goals by a player in a single season, and 38 assists for 80 points in 72 games, Harper joined the Adirondack Phantoms for five games during the 2009-2010 campaign and scored his first goal as a professional in that time. The Trenton Titans saw their five-game win streak and their seven-game point streak snapped this week, as the squad lost a pair of games to the Conference-leading Reading Royals. Although the Titans managed to eke out an overtime victory last Thursday against their division rival, Trenton lost back-to-back contests to Reading on Friday and Saturday to suffer consecutive losses for the first time since December 8-9. Friday’s setback was nearly a spectacular comeback, as the Titans lost 5-4 at the Sovereign Center. Trenton Titans forward and recent Adirondack Phantoms call-up Marcel Noebels has been named the ECHL’s Rookie of the Month for December. The 20-year-old native of Germany tallied nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points in 14 games last month helping the Titans go 7-4-3. Noebels tallied at least one point in 12 of 14 games during December, and recorded five multi-point games, including four points (3G, 1A) in a 7-6 win against Elmira on December 1, three points (1G, 2A) in a 5-2 win at Fort Wayne on December 22 and three assists in a highly-contentious 5-4 loss at …

Pair of Royals selected to start ECHL All-Star Game

Two members of a local minor-league hockey club have been selected to start in their league’s All-Star Game. They’re not Trenton Titans, but Reading Royals. Goaltender Philipp Grubauer and defenseman Denny Urban got the nod on Wednesday to take the ice first in the league’s mid-point competition for bragging rights on January 23 at Loveland, Colorado. Since being sent down from Hershey of the American Hockey League in late October, Grubauer has ignited his club’s rise to the top of the league standings by going 18-4-1 with a 2.28 goals-against average, .912 save percentage in 24 appearances.
