RICE & MICE: Hand fractures

Philadelphia Flyers defenseman, Chris Pronger was originally sidelined with some swelling in his hand after being hit by a puck on February 24, 2011 in a game against the New York Islanders. After x-rays failed to show a fracture, he returned to play after missing one game only to hit that same hand against the boards in a game on March 8, 2011 against the Edmonton Oilers. They are not sure if the break was initially caused by being hit with the puck in February, or if the fracture happened in the game against the Oilers, but a CT scan …

RICE & MICE: Five for fighting and 6-8 weeks with a high ankle sprain

First overall selection in the 2010 entry draft and Edmonton Oilers’ star rookie, Taylor Hall, saw his season come to an end much earlier than the rest of his NHL counterparts. It isn’t over because of a dismal season that saw the Oilers miss the playoffs. Hall is out for the remainder of the season with a high ankle sprain. He wasn’t battling along the boards or crashing the net when he was injured. Hall was injured while falling awkwardly in a fight with the Blue Jackets’ Derek Dorsett. Reactions to Hall’s injury have ranged from applauding the young talent …

Flight Plan Week of 03.13.2011

Ever hear that saying, “take one step forward and two steps back”? How about “two steps forward and one step back… off a cliff”? That’s what the Philadelphia Flyers did as you would think that last Sunday was rock bottom for the guys in Orange and Black when they took a 7-0 beating at the hands of the New York Rangers, but no. The Flyers were able to take any and all progress they had made in their previous two games against the Edmonton Oilers and the Toronto Maple Leafs and not only squander it, but revert back to a …

Carter Nets Two As Flyers End Skid

Recognizing the chance to turn things around with a break in their schedule, the Flyers had a dominating start ultimately leading to their 3-1 victory over the visiting Edmonton Oilers. Jeff Carter scored twice while Danny Briere had a goal and an assist as Philly embarrassed the Oilers in the opening period keeping them to a single shot. The win ends a four game losing streak and improves Philly’s record to 41-19-6. Looking to take the early lead, the Flyers were briefly halted when Chris Pronger went to the box for hooking. For the minute and thirty-seven seconds the Flyers were …

Flight Plan 03.06.2011

Every team in the NHL will go through lulls in their season where they won’t win games. They can play their best hockey of the season and still not get the bounces. For the Philadelphia Flyers, that isn’t the case. They’re playing terrible hockey. They’re not working harder than the other team. They’re not shutting teams down when they need to. They’re not scoring key goals. They’re not clicking on the power play. They can’t break out of the zone. They don’t get better, but worse as the game progresses. They just can’t keep their focus and right now they …

A Reasoner to Believe

That’s what it read at the top of the special insert, tucked within the tabloid-sized issue of The Heights, in mid-April of 1998. A plea for the Eagles’ best player to return for his senior season in the wake of a national championship game appearance, it depicted Marty Reasoner, clad in the Boston College home whites, waiting out a stoppage in play. It could have been from any game that season, but it was most likely taken in the 3 1/2 week period between the Hockey East quarterfinal round in early March and the NCAA Tournament Final, in Boston, on the …

Flight Plan week of 01.16.2011

The Philadelphia Flyers did pretty decently on last week’s road trip going 2-1-0. Their loss to the Boston Bruins was a bit hard to swallow but the team were absolutely able to wipe it from their memories by the time they arrived in Atlanta to face the Atlanta Thrashers the next day and won by a decisive 5-2 score.  The Flyers have four games this week and have five games coming up in their next eight days. Normally this would be a good thing for a team that clearly plays better when they have a bunch of games together rather …

Were the Flyers working on a deal to send Gagne to Columbus?

TSN in Canada has been airing a documentary the Edmonton Oilers have put together called “Oil Change.” The documentary is meant to give the fans behind the scenes access to a team in the rebuilding phase. Part 1 of the documentary aired before the draft which gave a fans a look at the process that went into making their first overall selection. Part 2 of the documentary aired this past Wednesday and covered the Oilers from the entry draft until the first day of the season. So what does the Edmonton Oilers and their documentary have to do with Simon …
