Future Flyers Report: 11/12

The Flyers used two of their seven draft picks in this year’s draft on forwards. The first was center Scott Laughton, who they selected in the first round at 20th overall. The second was Taylor Leier, the only winger selected by Philly in the draft, in the fourth round at 117th overall. Although Laughton plays with the Oshawa Generals in the OHL and Leier plays in the WHL with the Portland Winterhawks, both skaters have participated in the same number of games due to Laughton in the midst of a 10-game suspension. With 14 games apiece, Leier has produced 14 …

Future Flyers Report: 11/5

Despite a cloud of suspicion for his late Summer activities, Nick Cousins leads all Philadelphia Flyers prospects in scoring so far this season. The fact he has played more games than any other forward on the list shouldn’t take away from what he has done to this point. Not only does he lead his team — the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds — in points, which is currently a margin of 10 over right winger Sergey Tolchinsky, Cousins sits seventh overall in the Ontario Hockey League with 27 points over 18 games. The center has registered at least one point in 15 different contests this …

Answering reader mail, even when there isn’t any

I’ll let you in on a little media secret. Every time a writer uses a column to answer mail, or even better, “clean out the mailbag,” it usually means they just don’t have a strong enough premise to carry a whole piece. Or they just ran out of time. I cop to both those this week. With the Phantoms having played only four games, two of them in the far reaches of St. John’s, Newfoundland, there isn’t a whole lot of new material to cover. So please forgive me for me turning to the old writer’s crutch of answering reader …

Future Flyers Report: 10/22

FORWARDS: Thanks to the fact the OHL is the league furthest into their 2012-2013 season, skaters from the Ontario Hockey League lead both lists in this week’s Future Flyers Report standings. Both Nick Cousins and Scott Laughton have played 13 games so far this season, but Cousins has two more goals and four more assists than Laughton for a six-point lead at the top of the forwards’ list. Andrew Rowe and Marcel Noebels come in third and fourth, as they are the top scoring Flyers’ prospects in the ECHL. A rather surprising stat is Eric Wellwood’s one assist in four games for …

NHL proposal, as is, hurts Flyers

On Tuesday, the NHL made a new proposal to the NHLPA in which they offered a 50/50 split of Hockey Related Revenue, down from their initial proposal of 57/43. It was seen by many to be the first step towards some real progress in coming to an agreement on a new CBA, and saving an 82-game season. Yesterday, NHLPA Executive Director Don Fehr sent a letter to all players and agents in which he explains why he is less than thrilled with the proposal. Personally, I’m not the least bit surprised by the response. In fact, I think anyone who …
