The NHL’s Day of Atonement

In case you missed it, the Jewish Holiday Yom Kippur passed on Tuesday night. As many of you know, I am Jewish. On Yom Kippur, my fellow Jews and I sit in synagogue, fast, and pray for atonement for our sins for the past year. Furthermore, we, as a people and individually need to apologize to those we have hurt. Yom Kippur got me thinking not just about who I may have caused harm to (namely my fantastic editor Kim Pollock with the random times I e-mail her my weekly piece), but what I would be apologizing for if I …

Labour Bored

Earlier in the week, it was revealed by multiple sources throughout North America, TSN and RDS chief among them, that the National Hockey League Players Association intended to file briefs on behalf of their clients to the Quebec Labor Board. Added to that, was the report of a similar case to be presented in Alberta on behalf of the two clubs residing in its two largest cities. The argument, at its core, states that since the union is not certified in the province, it is illegal for the Canadiens organization to lock out players. This is a stunning turnaround from …

Point/Counterpoint: Are the fans enabling another lockout?

Welcome to the newest edition of “Point/Counterpoint,” where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes present both sides of one particular issue with their own unique view and flair. This week Kevin C and penaltykiller debate whether the fans are enabling another lockout. Point, Kevin: The fans are enabling the lockout and Gary Bettman has said as much. A few weeks back, Bettman said “We recovered last time because we have the world’s greatest fans.” I take that as essentially saying “It doesn’t matter if we lock out because you guys will come back no matter what,” and you know what, he’s entirely right. Hockey …

NHL and NHLPA Playing a Dangerous Game

I’ve tried my hardest to not discuss the potential NHL lockout. Now that it looms, I’ll tell you why I refused to make any mention of the lockout in my articles. For one, I don’t fully understand what the owners and players are thinking. I do understand that it all come down to money. What I mean is, how could the NHL and NHLPA allow their situation to get like this? Did they not learn from the NBA’s lockout last year? Secondly, I’ve refused to let myself get enraptured by the possibility of a lockout. Meaning, I’ve barely read any …

Lockout Lamentations

One of the things that I love most about living in Philadelphia is the instant bond you form with someone when you discover you’re both fans of a particular team, or player. I love that no matter where you go, you can strike up a conversation about local sports with a stranger and feel like you’re talking to an old friend. I always smile when I catch someone wearing a Flyers shirt, especially in the middle of the summer, when hockey is only on the minds of few. The idea of losing Flyers hockey for a season is a pretty …
