Hockey Hilarity: Staal Scores! For Martin Brodeur?!

Friday funnies brought to you straight from hockey’s own players, media personnel, and broadcast botches. We’ll be mucking it up every week right here, examining puck ups, puns, tweets, and more! Yesterday, the Carolina Hurricanes‘ Jordan Staal managed a dubious feat that has pushed the New Jersey Devils‘ Martin Brodeur into the NHL history books again. At 16:12 of the 1st period, with his team about to head to the power play, Staal collected the puck in the corner and threw it back towards the point hoping to set up shop in the offensive zone. Unfortunately, nobody was close enough to …

Hockey Hilarity: Cechmanek-esque Salute

Friday funnies brought to you straight from hockey’s own players, media personnel, and broadcast botches. We’ll be mucking it up every week right here, examining puck ups, puns, tweets, and more! Pretty sure most people have seen this video by now, but I figured I’d do a post about it as well. Austin Krause, a goalie (well, probably former goalie now) for Farmington High School in Minnesota, purposely puts a puck into his own team’s net, and then proceeds to show the team his IQ in the form of a certain single-fingered-salute, before leaving the ice. Sure, the video is pretty …

Crashing the Crease: Sailing No More

This week, we’re going to spend a little time talking about a subject near and dear to my heart: the struggling goaltender and the fear of failure after an unsuccessful stretch of games. I’ll use myself as the example and build from there. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve gone from feeling very fluid and natural in net to slow, overly reactive and ultimately ineffective. It’s resulted in some pretty ugly games, none of which I want to remember. On Tuesday, I finally had a game I would consider to be “okay,” in that we won and I stopped …

Crashing the Crease: Tools of the Trade

This week’s installment of Crashing the Crease is about the gear we use as goalies that seems to entitle the public to the criticism and bad goals that everyone loves (the title wasn’t self-referencing, despite what my teammates may say). For those who haven’t put on the pads before or have done so incorrectly, this should serve as a primer on what it is we wear and hopefully provide some insight should you decide to don the gear. I’ll address some of the manufacturers and tweaks guys have made to their gear in a later post. Because goalies are creatures …

Crashing the Crease: The Book on Bryz

Ilya Bryzgalov was brought to Philadelphia to do the seemingly impossible: stop the “goaltending carousel” that has been the counterpoint to nearly every success the organization has had in the past two decades. Marked by dismal lows and remarkable highs, the first few games of the 2011-2012 season kicked off seemingly well, but rapidly started losing steam. These early-season struggles persisted and eventually culminated in Bryz’s announcement of his benching at the Winter Classic, much to the delight of the Flyers coaching staff. Goalies are notorious for being quirky and somewhat unsettling.  They are typically the kind of guy that …
