Phantoms: New Home, New Hope — The Diehard Fans

So here we are. The AHL season has started and the Phantoms are off on a positive note, carrying an overtime win against the Hershey Bears this past weekend into a home-and-home with the Hartford Wolf Pack, which includes their home opener on October 12. Wait, what? The Phantoms won a game? It may sound harsh, but that’s the Philadelphia culture, right? Lose one game and the season is over? Well, things are not quite the same here in Glens Falls. In fact, it’s almost the opposite. Glens Falls has some of the most diehard hockey fans I have ever …

Frequent Flyer Miles: Hedberg released by Rangers, Nodl released from NLA club, Hlavac to Kladno

As the beginning of the NHL season nears, several former Philadelphia Flyers, draft picks of the team, and former members of the organization were involved in transactions this week. The biggest news might be the New York Rangers releasing Johan Hedberg, who was with the team on a Professional Try-Out. Hedberg, who was selected 218th overall by the Flyers in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, has spent the last three seasons with the New Jersey Devils. Two former Flyers were involved in moves this week, as Andreas Nodl was released by his NLA team and Jan Hlavac will join HC …

Then and Now: Martin Grenier

In the 1999 NHL Entry Draft there was a string of four straight defenseman taken in the second round with picks 42 to 45. Two of those turned into blue liners who have played at least 450 NHL games in Mike Commodore, who was taken 42nd overall by the New Jersey Devils, and Jordan Leopold, who was taken 44th overall by the Anaheim Ducks. The other two were Andrei Shefer, who was taken 43rd overall by the Los Angeles Kings and never took part in an NHL game, and Martin Grenier, who was taken 45th overall by the Colorado Avalanche …

Then and Now: Denis Gauthier

The 2013 Eastern Conference Finals will put the Boston Bruins against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Wade Redden will try and help Boston’s blue line slow down Pittsburgh’s offensive crew, which includes former Calgary Flame Jarome Iginla. Both Redden and Iginla were picked in the first round of the 1995 NHL Draft, as Redden went second overall behind Bryan Berard and Iginla went 11th overall to the Dallas Stars. Nine picks after Iginla the Calgary Flames picked Denis Gauthier. After being named to the QMJHL All-Star team and winning the Emile “Butch” Bouchard Trophy for QMJHL’s best defenseman in 1995-1996, Gauthier went …

Then and Now: Jamie Fritsch

Jamie Fritsch only played one game in the NHL. Unfortunately for Philadelphia Flyers’ fans, his big break could have waited a little bit longer. Similar to this season, the Flyers played the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals during the 2009 playoffs, as the Pens held the fourth seed in the East and Philly finished fifth. During the 2008-2009 season, however, Philly had a hold on the fourth seed in the East going down the stretch while the Pens had to hope for a shot at home-ice advantage. Going into their final game of the season, all the Flyers needed to do was register a point …
