The Streak

I was excited when I heard that Ilya Bryzgalov was going to be a Flyer. There was an immediate desire not to be pleased with the trading of Mike Richards to the Kings (supposedly to get the money) nor when I found out about the HUMANGOUS (had to) contract that the Flyers offered Bryzgalov to come. However, I liked the Phoenix goalie because I’d been following the Coyotes off and on since I started watching hockey. He got them into the playoffs in 2010 as far as I was concerned. And then the first half (3/4th’s?) of the season happened. …

A Record-Setting Night as the Flyers Best the Islanders 3-2

It was a night of accomplishments for the Flyers in a 3-2 win over the New York Islanders on Thursday night, none bigger than Ilya Bryzgalov setting a new franchise record for longest scoreless streak at 249:43. With less than 10 minutes to go in the third period, it looked like Bryzgalov was on the way to his fourth straight shutout, but the Islanders finally managed to figure him out. Michael Grabner tipped the puck past him with 6:30 left, and only 35 seconds later, the Islanders scored again – this time on a snap shot in the slot by …

Dr. No: Bryzgalov keeps shutout streak alive by blanking Devils

Maybe Ilya Bryzgalov was prescient back in January, pointing the way out of the woods and forward into the thick of a playoff race whose pulse he seemingly controls. On Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Center, the $51 million man joined some elite goaltending company by stopping all 17 shots he faced as the  Philadelphia Flyers silenced the  New Jersey Devils, 3-0. It was one of the easiest games he’s had as a professional and he took it all in stride, as if it was an eventuality. Bryzgalov notched his sixth whitewash of the season and his third in as …

Devils cramp Flyers’ style, five-game win streak over

The New Jersey Devils injected a dose of reality into the plans of the Philadelphia Flyers, using a three-goal third period to claim a 4-1 decision in the opener of a home-and-home series Sunday night from Prudential Center. Ilya Kovalchuk did his usual damage, tallying a goal and two assists. Zach Parise and Patrik Elias picked up a goal and helper apiece, while Martin Brodeur worked his magic by stopping 18-of-19 shots. It was the 650th career victory for the 39-year-old Montreal native. “We want to get into the playoffs and do well once we’re there,” Kovalchuk said of his …

Bryzgalov Blanks Panthers, Flyers Extend Win Streak To Four

The Flyers dominated the Florida Panthers tonight at the Wells Fargo Center for a 5-0 win, which extend their winning streak to four games. Ilya Bryzgalov had another amazing performance, as he made 28 saves for his second shutout in a three-game span. Bryzgalov’s fourth shutout of the season came without the help of defensemen Kimmo Timonen, Andrej Meszaros, and Pavel Kubina. Bryzgalov earned the first star of the game and it was clearly deserved. The Flyers’ goalie, who recorded his 27th career shutout, made crucial saves early in the game, after both of the bouts in the contest, and late in …

The Best of Bryz?

When the Flyers signed former Phoenix netminder Ilya Bryzgalov last July, fans thought their prayers were answered. Finally, a solid goaltender between the pipes! Finally, the end of goalie controversies! Right? Well, not exactly. Bryzgalov’s struggles this season have been well-documented, and plenty of people have questioned if the Flyers made a huge mistake in signing him to such a lengthy contract – and at such a high cost. However, Bryzgalov has seemed to find his groove in this recent stretch of games. He’s making big saves, he’s keeping his team in the game, and you can practically feel his …

What About Bob?

Keep those number 35 jerseys stored away, because we in Flyerdom won’t be seeing 23-year old netminder Sergei Bobrovsky for a while. It appears as though Peter Laviolette has decided to let incumbent Ilya Bryzgalov keep the keys to the Flyers nets. Since returning from the flu, Bryzgalov has started nine straight games. In his last nine starts, Bryzgalov has a 2.33 GAA and a .912 save percentage. Bryz also recorded his third shut out of the season in that span. Only once in the last nine games have we seen the man Flyers fans affectionately call “Bob.” Bobrovsky came …
