In their three home games this week, the Flyers were able to clinch a playoff spot with a pair of wins over teams currently sitting outside the postseason scenario. Unfortunately, Ilya Bryzgalov suffered a chip fracture in his right foot. Hopefully for Philly, Bryzgalov will be back by the end of next week when the club takes on the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers as part of their four-game schedule over the next few days. A dominant win over the New York Islanders and a pair of comebacks helped the Flyers gain five crucial points in the standings this week, as Philly still has a slim chance to win the Eastern Conference. Unfortunately, the only game in which the Flyers didn’t earn a point may have been their most impressive performance, as they posted 23 more shots than the Panthers in their one-goal game loss last night. The New Jersey Devils injected a dose of reality into the plans of the Philadelphia Flyers, using a three-goal third period to claim a 4-1 decision in the opener of a home-and-home series Sunday night from Prudential Center. Ilya Kovalchuk did his usual damage, tallying a goal and two assists. Zach Parise and Patrik Elias picked up a goal and helper apiece, while Martin Brodeur worked his magic by stopping 18-of-19 shots. For the first time in awhile, the Flyers put together a string of wins this week, as they won all three of their contests. Ilya Bryzgalov played a big part in the team’s success, as he won all three games with a save percentage of .948. With a four-game schedule ahead for the next seven days, hopefully Bryzgalov can keep Philly’s winning ways intact against some strong opponents. The Flyers managed to hold on for a one-goal win Thursday before they dropped both of their games on the weekend to go 1-2-0 this week. The win was the Flyers’ second since the All-Star break, as they are 2-4-2 since the break with both wins coming at home. Philly looks forward to two games against Eastern Conference teams outside the playoff picture in the next few days, as well as a meeting with the Penguins to determine crucial points in the standings. After a dominant victory on Thursday against one of the hotter teams in the league, the Flyers proceeded to drop their next handful of games to suffer their first three-game losing streak of the season. Poor starts and poor goaltending hurt the Flyers over the weekend, as the only other point they gained this week was from last night’s shootout loss. Flyers’ Monster Third Period Too Little, Too Late In 6-4 Loss To NJ

Thanks to a huge third period, the Flyers turned a six-goal deficit after two periods into a 6-4 loss at home to the New Jersey Devils this afternoon. Alexei Ponikarovsky recorded his 300th NHL point with an assist in the first period before he put home the game-winner less than two minutes into the second period for his second two-point game as a Devil. Kurtis Foster had two goals and an assist for his first three-point performance since December 29th, 2006, while Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and two assists in addition to a decision over Brayden Schenn in a …

In their only game this week, the Flyers took part in yet another shootout. Unfortunately for Philly, it was unable to pull out a win. The Orange and Black did, however, keep up with the Rangers, who also lost in a shootout this week. The Flyers look forward to a difficult week ahead, as three of their four opponents are currently in the playoff picture. For a third time this season, the Flyers lost to the Winnipeg Jets. The Flyers went 2-1-1 in a week that featured a lot of ups and downs for the guys in Orange and Black.
