Hartnell out indefinitely

Remember when Scott Hartnell took the full brunt of that Kimmo Timonen slapshot in his leg while trying to screen Martin Brodeur last night? Well, there’s a price to be paid for such sacrifice. From Flyers GM Paul Holmgren: “Scott will be out indefinitely with a left foot injury. We will know more on this within a day or two as we await results of tests.” With Hartnell and Danny Briere out of the lineup for Thursday’s game at home against the New York Rangers, that’s a whopping 53 goals from two key top-six forwards removed from the lineup in …

Rinaldo hurt, McGinn called up

As if it weren’t bad enough the Flyers fell to 0-2 with a 5-2 loss at Buffalo on Sunday, forward Zac Rinaldo will be out of the lineup for at least one week after suffering a 20-stitch gash on his right leg. The feisty winger left the game in the first period and did not return after taking the worst of a collision with Sabres defenseman Robyn Regehr. “It was a weird feeling. I looked at my pad, and the sock was cut. It was like an X-acto knife cut it. I saw that and I was pissed off it …

Another one bites the dust

Add Andreas Lilja to the growing list of unfortunates in this offseason. The Swedish defenseman pronounced himself out for the next four months after undergoing hip surgery, according to a report in a Swedish-language publication translated by Bill Meltzer on this otherwise beautiful Sunday. The 37-year-old totaled six assists in only 46 regular-season games for Philly last season, his first here after spending 2010-11 with the Anaheim Ducks. Lilja was also on the shelf due to a high ankle sprain suffered on the day after Thanksgiving in a matinee home victory over the Montreal Canadiens, but returned before Christmas. He …

Meszaros out following surgery on Achilles tendon

The plot thickens regarding the health of the defense. “Andrej had successful surgery this morning to repair a torn right Achilles tendon. The surgery was performed by Dr. Steve Raikin at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia,” Flyers GM Paul Holmgren announced Tuesday morning. Andrej was injured last week during summer training in Slovakia. Andrej will be out indefinitely.” The 26-year-old totaled seven goals and 25 points in 62 regular-season games last year, and was voted the Barry Ashbee Trophy as the club’s best defenseman the year before. Injuries of this type typically take months to heal and recover, as we’ve seen …
