JvR out with concussion

Everybody wondering “What’s wrong with James van Riemsdyk?” now has an answer, so they can stop gnashing their teeth and rending their garments over it. From the desk of Flyers GM Paul Holmgren late this morning: “James was hit in the head in each of our last two games. He reported yesterday, not feeling like himself. He will be out indefinitely with a concussion.” I agree with some sentiments over the internets today, that there’s a new way to mask injury issues: rampant trade rumors. Van Riemsdyk was limited to 15 shifts totaling 10:32 on ice in Thursday’s 3-2 win …

Holmgren talks Pronger, Schenn

Courtesy of the Philadelphia Flyers Q: What changed with Chris? “I think over the last few days he’s had some difficulties… a fairly persistent headache, just sluggish feeling – so we’re just trying to do the right thing here and get him checked out by the doctors in Pittsburgh and just see what we’re dealing with.  Is it a concussion?  I don’t know that we know that.  We want to get a better idea, obviously.” Q: There’s still no idea what it might have stemmed from?  The high stick? “I don’t know.  I looked yesterday and I think he played …

Pronger talks post surgery

Courtesy of the Philadelphia Flyers Q: When did you have your surgery and how are you feeling? A: I had the surgery on Tuesday afternoon. I’m feeling okay just ice and elevation, trying to get the swelling out and I start my rehab tomorrow Q: Holmgren said the other day that you would be out for 4 weeks. Are you optimistic that it will be four weeks? Do you think you could be back sooner than that? A: I have no idea. Again, I had surgery two days ago, so  once I start getting my rehab going, as I progress …

Rare virus, spread to knee, to keep Pronger out for one month

The Philadelphia Flyers are apparently on the forefront of a new medical breakthrough. On Monday afternoon, general manager Paul Holmgren revealed that defenseman and captain Chris Pronger, who has missed the last four games with a virus, apparently will be out of the lineup for another month following surgery on his left knee. “Chris will have surgery on his left knee tomorrow afternoon. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Peter DeLuca. The procedure will clean out some loose particles that have given Chris some problems over the last month or so,” Holmgren said. “We were hopeful that the time missed with …

Holmgren injured in bike accident

We’ve recently spent some time shredding Paul Holmgren’s role in the Flyers’ recent roller-coaster pursuit of a Stanley Cup, but this is never good news to report: According to CSNPhilly.com late Monday night, the club’s 55-year-old general manager was injured while riding a bike in Avalon, New Jersey. The report stated that Holmgren suffered broken ribs, a broken shoulder and other cuts that required stitching. Holmgren was apparently taken to Cooper Medical Center in Camden and will be kept overnight for observation. On Tuesday morning, the Inquirer revealed the full statement taken by Avalon police on the matter: (Avalon, NJ)—Avalon Police …
