Voracek escapes injury in car accident

Philadelphia Flyers Forward Jakub Voracek was involved in a car accident earlier today. Voracek crashed his Ferrari into a truck near his home town in Kladno, Czech Republic.  The 23 year-old Flyers winger was luckily uninjured in the accident.  Paul Holmgren spoke with Jake earlier in the day and released a statement about it.  “He was involved in a car accident in the Czech Republic.  Although his car did suffer damage, there were no injuries.  Jake is fine,” said Holmgren. The news was first reported by a Czech news outlet (sport.cz) According to the site, Voracek tried to avoid hitting the truck …

2013 Year in Review: Brayden Schenn

When a team trades their captain, it is inevitable that a lot of pressure will be placed on the players that come back in return. Brayden Schenn has yet to play a full season in the National Hockey League, but it’s hard to believe it based on how high expectations are on the young forward to contribute. Starting last season with injuries before finally getting a chance to stick with the club, this lockout-shortened year was his first opportunity to play an NHL season from start to finish. Though he may have fallen short of becoming a reliable secondary scoring …

World Championship Day 1 – Voracek scores, Gustafsson plays top D role

With the World Championships underway and a large number of current and former Flyers taking part, I wanted to provide quick updates of the tournament which will be focused mainly on current and former Flyers players. Yesterday three Flyers got a chance to play for their respective national teams – Jake Voracek, Erik Gustafsson and Marcel Noebels. Czech Republic – Belarus 2-0 Jake Voracek 1 goal 0 assists (PPG) Team Czech Republic hasn’t lost in the World Championship opening game for as long as I can remember. They proved that yesterday against Belarus. The game was a bit boring but …

Flyers Fight Back In The Final Five Minutes, Win 5-3 Against Montreal

For the first time in just under a year, the Philadelphia Flyers have reached a three-game win streak thanks to a 5-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night. Erik Gustafsson had the game-winner late in regulation, while Jake Voracek’s empty netter in the final minute of play sealed the deal. Alexei Emelin, Brandon Prust, and David Desharnais scored for the Canadiens, while Sean Couturier, Simon Gagne, Wayne Simmonds, Gustafsson, and Voracek handled the scoring for Philadelphia. Though Ilya Bryzgalov only faced a total of 17 Montreal shots, he allowed three goals, including one where it appeared he ducked …

A collection of your opinions

In recent days, I have had some very insightful hockey conversations with people and have read many others online as well. I would like to share some of those thoughts and include a few of my own here. Paul Holmgren has been a successful general manager in many ways but his biggest failure has been assembling solid clubs at the AHL and ECHL levels. In order to develop good prospects, the Flyers need good affiliate teams. Good prospects are less likely to reach their potential without a solid supporting cast. Take the Columbus Blue Jackets, for example. Granted, CBJ is …

An Open Letter to Wayne Simmonds

Hey, Simmer. I’m not sure if you know this, but when you first came to Philadelphia, I wasn’t your biggest fan. It wasn’t your fault, really. You were the other woman, so-to-speak. I was reeling from the trades of Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, two of my favorite players and the guys who had been at the core of the organization. You, Schenner, Couturier, and Jake took some heat from me because I was bitter. Everyone kept talking about how great of a player you were. How gritty you were, how you would be a perfect fit in Philadelphia. I …

Oh my God, we're not having a fire... sale (yet)!

Looking forward: Who stays?

Planning for next season. It’s the phrase you have heard in recent days and will continue to hear after each excruciating loss and lackluster performance. It is a way of saying that season is beyond repair and that the organization will make no knee-jerk moves or hasty decisions. Take, for instance, Peter Laviolette. Whether he is a fall guy or responsible for the poor play of the team is irrelevant at this point. As Chris Therien said on the radio last night, “Each coach has an expiration date. You get hired to get fired.” It’s an inevitability, a foregone conclusion. Lavy is merely …

It’s time to say goodbye to dump and chase and emphasize puck possession

I’ve always been the kind of person to ask “why”. I tend to not just accept things as they are presented to me, but rather, I’d like to understand the nuances behind whatever it may be. I apply this same questioning to the game of hockey; and of late, particularly why the Flyers, and the game of ice hockey in general, can’t seem to rid itself of dump and chase and strongly emphasize puck possession. If you know me personally, you know that I’ve played roller hockey my entire life, into my young adulthood. I played ECRHA and AIHL hockey, …

Flyers Miss Opportunities, Fall to Maple Leafs 4-2

Despite a quick start and numerous chances offered by Toronto goalie Ben Scrivens, the Philadelphia Flyers were unable to pull out a win in Monday night’s matchup with the Maple Leafs, falling by a 4-2 count. Monday’s was the second of three games between the two teams this season. The Leafs took the first one back on February 11 with a final score of 5-2. In a game where the Flyers were attempting to hit the .500 mark for the first time this season, they looked downright lost at times. Kimmo Timonen and Mike Knuble were noticeably slow on the …
