Five-on-five numbers indicate the Flyers just aren’t very good

It’s been a schedule full of disappointments through 16 games in this 2013 NHL season. The Flyers sit in last place in the Atlantic Division, and 12th in the Eastern Conference; but they are only two points out of the eight spot. It’s no secret that the special teams have, and should, receive their fair share of the blame.  The power play comes in at eighteenth in the league, while the penalty kill ranks sixteenth. Future Flyers Report: Zolnierczyk and Gustafsson in the NHL

During the 2011-2012 campaign, the tandem of Harry Zolnierczyk and Erik Gustafsson saw their fair share of action with the Philadelphia Flyers. The pair, who are both in the top six for points with the Adirondack Phantoms this season, each played a game for the Orange and Black over the last several days, as the two participated in at least 30 contests last season. Second Period Hurts Flyers, Lose 5-2 in Toronto

The Philadelphia Flyers’ troubles away from the Wells Fargo Center continued tonight, as they were pummeled by the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 at the Air Canada Centre. Matt Frattin had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, while Cody Franson and Nazem Kadri each had two assists in front of their home crowd. Flight Plan: On the Road Again

After a four game home stand which saw them earn seven of a possible eight points, the Philadelphia Flyers start a five game road trip Monday night. This week, the Flyers’ schedule has them doubled up on back-to-backs as they take on the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Winnipeg Jets, the New Jersey Devils, and the Montreal Canadiens. Poll: Which former Flyer is the most missed right now?

Heading into this past offseason, the Flyers two biggest free agents were Jaromir Jagr and Matt Carle. While they had discussions with both, the pursuit of Ryan Suter, Zach Parise, and Shea Weber at various times all contributed to the two ultimately accepting attractive deals with the Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning respectively. Additionally, James Van Riemsdyk was shipped to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Luke Schenn in an attempt to strengthen the blue line.
