Flight Plan: Rough Skies Ahead

The Philadelphia Flyers are four games into their six-game road trip and are 2-2-0. This past week they were 1-2-0, beating the Detroit Red Wings by a score of 6-3, but losing to the Minnesota Wild, 2-0, and getting shellacked by the Dallas Stars, 5-1. Steve Mason allowed more than three goals for the first time since coming over to Philadelphia late last season, but through no fault of his own. The Stars’ top line of Jamie Benn, Valeri Nichushkin, and Tyler Seguin was dominant. Seguin scored a natural hat trick as the three players combined for a total of …

Seguin and Nichushkin destroy Flyers, Stars win big in Dallas

After putting forward a strong first period, the Philadelphia Flyers were absolutely abused up and down the ice during the second period, as the Dallas Stars produced an impressive 5-1 effort at home. To come out the way they did against the lowly Florida Panthers, is just unacceptable. To need overtime and the shootout to win a game against the Nashville Predators is similarly unacceptable. This team is far too reliant on Ray Emery and Steve Mason to keep games within reach. They can’t …

RICE & MICE: The appendix, appendicitis, and appendectomies

When is a belly ache more than just an ache? When is it something more serious? Well, appendicitis comes to mind as one such serious occasion. For a part of the body that has no real vital purpose, the appendix sure can cause a lot of commotion.  The big scientific name for the appendix is vermiform appendix. Vermiform is Latin for “worm-shaped” and worm-shaped it most certainly is. You take a bite of a burger, chew and swallow, the food moves out of your mouth, down your esophagus and into the stomach, being digested all along the way. When the …
