The Second Day of Claudemas: Two Non Howe Twos

Here we are in December with little to do in this tough lockout time. What’s a blog to do? Well, it looks like a 12 Days of Christmas-themed series of posts is the way to go. But, we realize that all of you hockey fans aren’t into Christmas, so we’ve named it after the man nicknamed Orange Jesus and called it Claudemas. On the second day of Claudemas, Flyers Faithful gave to me…two Flyers who wore the number two that aren’t the great Mark Howe! Mark Howe finally made it into the Hockey Hall of Fame this year, and the …

Dazzlers and Duds: Laperriere v. Roenick and Carle v. Niittymaki

Several weeks back, we asked our beloved Twitter followers who were their most loved and hated Flyers of the past decade. It led to some great names and some great discussion. Well it got us thinking. In the doldrums that is August in the hockey world — not to mention the impending doom of a lockout —  we decided to put together a tournament; poll style! We’ve compiled the responses for both the Loved and Hated categories, and seeded them according to our whims and wishes. What you see before you is the result of our efforts. While we may …

Then and Now: Sami Kapanen

In the middle of the 2002-2003 regular season, the Philadelphia Flyers shipped defenseman Bruno St. Jacques and winger Pavel Brendl to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a pair of players. Ryan Bast was one player Philly acquired in the deal, a defenseman who only played a pair of games in the NHL, both of which were with the Flyers. The other was Sami Kapanen, a veteran left winger in his eighth season in the NHL. After several seasons with the Hartford Whalers’ organization, who became the Hurricanes in his third season with the club, Kapanen became a member of his …

Review: Ice Hockey Made Simple: A Spectator’s Guide

First written in 1993, Ice Hockey Made Simple: A Spectator’s Guide by PJ Harari and Dave Ominsky, has been reprinted and updated numerous times. Although not quite as current as one would expect. As I started reading, I put complete trust that everything would be up to date. Why wouldn’t it be? I’ve been watching hockey since 2010 and the basic set-up of hockey hasn’t changed since then. The only thing I can think of that has evolved has been the discipline on head hits (but that’s another rant and a half). So, when I read within the first ten pages …

This Week in Flyers History 2/12-2/18

The continuation of a new weekly series here at Flyers Faithful, “This Week in Flyers History” aims to provide historical information on Flyers games of the past with some kind of significance, using pictures and videos where appropriate. February 12, 1984 Canucks 6, Flyers 5 – Despite a 20-4 shot edge in the first period and leads of 2-0, 3-1 and 5-3, Philly allows Vancouver to score three straight in the third period to win, culminating when Tiger Williams tallied with 1:56 remaining in regulation. Pelle Lindbergh, who surrendered six goals on just 29 shots, is in the midst of suffering …

The one where Jeremy Roenick responds to Philly fans

So, you may have heard by now that Jeremy Roenick appeared on Master Debaters with Jay Mohr. The group of four panelists discussed which city had the most annoying sports fans and, as expected, the conversation inevitably turned to Philadelphia. Mohr lead the charge against Philly, attacking the city’s sports fans each time he spoke. By the time Roenick finally had the opportunity to speak, it’s likely that Philly fans were so annoyed at Mohr that they were ready to pounce if Roenick called Philly anything shy of the best city with the best fans on the planet. Roenick mentions …

MasterGame Theater

It became known as the Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre, a Saturday afternoon on South Broad Street between the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers on February 14, 2004. Two days earlier, in the opener of the home-and-road set at Madison Square Garden, a Flyers 2-1 win came at a heavy price. Jeremy Roenick’s jaw was destroyed when he got in the way of a slap shot, and Keith Primeau was felled with a concussion. Both would be out for significant time. But a deep veteran club under Ken Hitchcock was just a little bit deeper thanks to a pre-raided Philadelphia Phantoms, …

Spectrum Memories: A view from above

To celebrate my 25th year of hockey fandom, I will occasionally step into the way-back machine and write about events in the Flyers’ past. For the balance of the season, I will be dipping into the well to ruminate about some things related to my love of the Philadelphia Flyers, and in general about the fan experience as a youngster. This is the fifth in the series of Spectrum Memories. As I’ve established in previous posts, I was a nosebleed dweller at the Spectrum throughout my youth. That was the deal if my parents were going to front the tickets for a whole season. Still, there were …
