Flyers need to address faceoff-dot issues

Forgetting the back line for a moment, one of the Flyers’ most glaring weaknesses is in those eight little circles found throughout the ice surface…the faceoff dots. While Claude Giroux continued to improve in that department, to the tune of 54.5 percent this past season — good for 19th in the league — he was pretty much the only option the club had when they needed to win a draw. Subsequently, nobody in the entire league took more faceoffs than Giroux. Sean Couturier and Brayden Schenn took the second and third most draws on the team, but only won them …

Simmer Scores Twice, Flyers Beat Surging Predators

A strong, hard-working effort from the Flyers led to their impressive 4-1 over the visiting Nashville Predators tonight. Wayne Simmonds put home a pair of goals in the win, as Ilya Bryzgalov made 26 saves for his ninth game of the season where he allowed one goal against or less. Claude Giroux had a goal and an assist, while Kimmo Timonen had a pair of assists in a win that extended the Flyers’ point streak to five games and handed the Predators their second loss in their last 10 games. Ryan Suter, who will most likely remain in Nashville following the trade deadline, had …

Atlantic Watch: 10/12-10/18

Three more games for the Flyers this week resulted in five more points in the standings. Losing their first game of the year in overtime to the Kings, the Flyers are no longer perfect on the season. However, since they won their other games in the week, the Flyers still haven’t lost in regulation this season. Sure, it’s upsetting to lose a game like Saturday’s to Los Angeles, a team featuring former Philly teammates Mike Richards and Simon Gagne, but it’s important to earn points early in the year. It’s also important to see many of the young players stepping …

Constructing a trade rumor timeline

The big rumor today was that the Flyers and Predators were working on a deal to send Scott Hartnell back to Nashville. How did this come to be? When the Flyers were originally shopping Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, Hartnell was apparently on the block too. Hartnell is the last remaining member of the Center City crew. He is overpaid and the Flyers are tight against the cap. Nobody expected Mike Richards or Jeff Carter to be traded. Now, people are more willing to believe that anything is possible. Paul Holmgren said that both Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier could …
