We have 25 days until free agency and I’m sure each and every one of those days will be rumor laden until July 1 arrives. Paul Holmgren was fairly active last season, adding Andrej Meszaros, Sean O’Donnell, Jody Shelley and Nikolay Zherdev, while retaining Darroll Powe and Daniel Carcillo. However all of that activity caused casualties of the cap. Arron Asham signed with Pittsburgh as a free agent and Simon Gagne, the longest- tenured Flyer at the time, waived his no-trade clause in a much maligned deal with Tampa Bay, while we took on Matt Walker — or more precisely, his two hip surgeries. …
The Flyers need to rebuild the fourth line
The fourth line needs new wingers. We’ve heard it over and over again from pundits and fans alike, although they may not have realized they were saying it at the time. So, let’s take a look at some of the common themes we have seen this off-season in regards to the needs of the Flyers: They need more heart The forward crop is small and needs to get bigger The team needs more grit The Flyers are really missing a guy like Ian Laperriere The Flyers really miss Arron Asham Jody Shelley and Dan Carcillo have been unable to contribute …
Thomas Saves 52 In Bruins 3-2 OT Win
A goal 31 seconds into the game and 54 shots on net weren’t enough for the Flyers to win tonight as the Bruins grabbed a 2-0 series lead heading into Boston. Tim Thomas had 52 saves on the night including 32 in the third period and overtime. David Krejci scored his third goal of the series 14 minutes into overtime while James van Riemsdyk had a two-goal night as the Flyers look to win both games in Boston to even the series at two. A strong start was something the Flyers lacked last game. This game the Flyers dictated play …

Callahan Scores Four, Losing Streak Reaches Four
In what was hands down their worst effort all year long, the Flyers were absolutely dominated by the New York Rangers in Madison Square Garden by a 7-0 count, to extend their losing streak to a season-high four games. A career-high four-goal game from Ryan Callahan, including the game-winning goal inside the first minute of play, helped in the embarrassment of the Eastern Conference leaders on a gloomy Sunday. Mats Zuccarello added on two while Artem Anisimov had a goal as well, while Henrik Lundqvist recorded a twenty-four save shutout. Unlike Saturday’s matinee setback, the Flyers got off to a …
A Reasoner to Believe
That’s what it read at the top of the special insert, tucked within the tabloid-sized issue of The Heights, in mid-April of 1998. A plea for the Eagles’ best player to return for his senior season in the wake of a national championship game appearance, it depicted Marty Reasoner, clad in the Boston College home whites, waiting out a stoppage in play. It could have been from any game that season, but it was most likely taken in the 3 1/2 week period between the Hockey East quarterfinal round in early March and the NCAA Tournament Final, in Boston, on the …
Who would you trade: Carcillo or Shelley?
Broad Street Hockey wonders if the Flyers are looking to trade Dan Carcillo or Jody Shelley. When I asked Travis Hughes who he would trade, he said he wasn’t sure. My intention was to respond to him on Twitter but it is too complex of an issue to discuss in 140 character chunks. It has been said that Shelley is a great clubhouse leader and that is something that could be invaluable to the Flyers in the postseason. Carcillo has more scoring potential, is more versatile, and can be used up and down the lineup. However, one could make the …
Flight Plan week of 02.13.2011 One Day Removed
The Philadelphia Flyers finally get a win after a long layoff, beating the Carolina Hurricanes after four days off and how do they follow it up after another little layoff? A second shutout loss in just 12 days at the hands of the Los Angeles Kings. Granted, this team has shown it plays better when they have a bunch of games packed into the schedule, but they should probably realize that teams looking up at the standings, and there are a lot of them, are going to be coming every game from about two weeks ago on out. The Flyers …
Five Questions: What moves do the Flyers need to make, if any, at the deadline?
Flyers Faithful asked Dustin Leed from The Fourth Period and The Hockey Guys, Stephen Whyno from Philly Sports Daily, David Strehle from NHL Hot Stove, and our very own Nick D five questions about the ’11 Flyers’ season. We are very grateful that they took the time to share their opinions and predictions with us. Each day of this week, we will run the answers to one of those questions. Today’s question is: What moves do the Flyers need to make, if any, at the deadline? Dustin Leed: I think the Flyers need a depth winger who can play up and down the line-up. Preferably a …
Flyers Hang On For 3-2 Win
The Flyers won 3-2 against the Rangers tonight, but it didn’t end gracefully. After going up 3-0 less than five minutes into the second period, the Flyers wouldn’t score for the remainder of the game. It seemed as though the Flyers would skate out the clock after a couple minutes were played in the third, but the Rangers had different plans. Brian Boucher allowed a soft Wojtek Wolski goal and a hungry Rangers team capitalized on the momentum scoring less than 3 minutes later to make it a one-goal game. Thanks to Boucher’s overall play, though, Philly hung on to …
