Paul Holmgren became the interim General Manager of the Philadelphia Flyers on October 22, 2006. That interim title was removed only weeks later on November 11. Holmgren was able to take a team that finished last in the National Hockey League, and rebuild it to make a deep run all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals the very next season. Yes, some of Holmgren’s moves have been amazing, but he’s also a guy who has gotten this organization into some hot water with the salary cap and was forced to make deals that were head scratchers to say the least. The Flyers managed to hold on for a one-goal win Thursday before they dropped both of their games on the weekend to go 1-2-0 this week. The win was the Flyers’ second since the All-Star break, as they are 2-4-2 since the break with both wins coming at home. Philly looks forward to two games against Eastern Conference teams outside the playoff picture in the next few days, as well as a meeting with the Penguins to determine crucial points in the standings. Scott Hartnell recorded a Gordie Howe hat trick, while Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 24 shots in the Flyers’ 4-3 win over the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs tonight. Brayden Schenn scored his sixth goal of the season late in the second period for his first game-winning goal in the NHL, as the Flyers ended their season-high three-game losing streak. Max Talbot and Claude Giroux were the other two Flyers to score in the second period. Taking part in their first two-game week since the opening week of the season, the Flyers enjoyed two road wins against Western Conference opponents on Friday and Saturday. Claude Giroux provided a pair of game-winning goals as Ilya Bryzgalov got back on track this week winning back-to-back road games for the first time since his shutout against the New Jersey Devils on October 8. Those messages ranged from, “Good luck with that,” to “What a terrible choice” to the simple but poignant, “Bwahahahahaha.” These were people jaded by the abysmal record that the Whalers posted during his tenure as Hartford’s coach and his brief stint as GM in the years that eventually led up to Hartford’s relocation to Carolina. The Flyers may have absolutely clobbered the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night, and the Flyers may have only been a shootout goal or two away from going 3-0-0 this week, but these three games weren’t the best Flyers team we’ve seen all season. Before their Saturday night massacre against the worst team in the league, the Flyers may have played 125 minutes as well as participate in a shootout in their first two games, but they really only showed up for a total of about 20 minutes.
