Why you heff to be mad? Raffl caps off Flyers’ shootout win against Bryzgalov, Oilers

Ilya Bryzgalov failed in the shootout yet again in his career, but this time it’s a good thing for the Philadelphia Flyers, as the Orange and Black grabbed two points in a 4-3 decision against the Edmonton Oilers on the road. Claude Giroux and Michael Raffl beat Bryzgalov in the shootout, while Wayne Simmonds recorded another multi-goal performance. The captain and Jakub Voracek each provided two-assist games, while Taylor Hall had the lone multi-point performance for the Oilers in the loss. Steve Mason stopped 13 of 16 for the win, while Bryzgalov stopped 35 shots in the loss. The shootout …

Game 38 Preview: Philadelphia Flyers @ Edmonton Oilers

Philadelphia Flyers (17-16-4) @ Edmonton Oilers (13-24-3), 10:00pm, CSN-Philly/CBC Ilya Bryzgalov may have called it “just another game,” but you have to wonder if the Philadelphia Flyers will look at the contest in the same way. If it wasn’t for the acquisition of Bryzgalov the Flyers wouldn’t have Sean Couturier, Jakub Voracek, Wayne Simmonds, or Brayden Schenn and still have Mike Richards and Jeff Carter. The Russian goaltender was the reason Paul Holmgren made his bold decisions on June 23, 2011. Whether you agree with Holmgren’s decisions or not, these transactions were made to acquire a goalie that was supposed …

Flight Plan: One at Home, Six On The Road

The Philadelphia Flyers ended up with five of a possible eight points last week in two home-and-home sets with new divisional rivals the Washington Capitals and the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Flyers scored a total of 17 goals last week, and scored north of two goals in all four contests. Unfortunately, they also allowed 17 goals, eight of which came in third periods over the course of the week. In games where both teams have a chance to win going into the third period, the best teams find ways to win games in the final frame. That trait has eluded …

Flyperbole: Rumor Time with Wayne Simmonds, Luke Schenn, Braydon Coburn

In the wake of the Max Talbot for Steve Downie trade, the rumor mill for the Flyers was working overtime. The team was losing and everyone expected Paul Holmgren to blow it all up. While it could certainly still happen, a lot of that talk has died down after the Flyers won 3 straight. That said, there’s still a lot going on.   OIL LEAK Darren Dreger tweeted that the Flyers turned down three 2nd round picks from the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman Braydon Coburn at the 2013 NHL Draft. There’s three basic mindsets here:   Good, Braydon Coburn is …

Game 16 Preview: Edmonton Oilers @ Philadelphia Flyers

Edmonton Oilers (4-11-2) @ Philadelphia Flyers (4-10-1), 1:00pm, NHL Network/CSN-Philly Well, a meeting between the second-worst and third-worst teams in the NHL took an interesting turn on Friday. After a day filled with several trade rumors between the two clubs, the Edmonton Oilers signed a recently released Philadelphia Flyer that was at least entertaining, if not productive on the ice, as the Western Conference club signed Ilya Bryzgalov. It seemed as though it was only a matter of time before a club reached out to the former Philly goaltending character. Ironically, the team that did so signed Bryzgalov the day …
