Atlantic Watch: 3/28-4/3

In their four-game schedule this week, the Flyers posted a record of 2-1-1 and picked up what might be there most intense victory of the 2011-2012 regular season with their win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday. It’s those same Pens that the Flyers trail by three points for fourth in the conference and the chance for home-ice advantage in the clubs’ first-round playoff series. The Orange and Black still have a shot for fourth, but they’ll need to beat a team fighting for their playoff lives along with the Pens this week. The Broad Street Bullies started off the week with …

Atlantic Watch: 3/14-3/20

A dominant win over the New York Islanders and a pair of comebacks helped the Flyers gain five crucial points in the standings this week, as Philly still has a slim chance to win the Eastern Conference. Unfortunately, the only game in which the Flyers didn’t earn a point may have been their most impressive performance, as they posted 23 more shots than the Panthers in their one-goal game loss last night. Three games against three clubs that are lower in the conference standings should help the Flyers a lot over the next couple days, as the Orange and Black hope to clinch a …

Atlantic Watch: 2/29-3/6

For the first time in awhile, the Flyers put together a string of wins this week, as they won all three of their contests. Ilya Bryzgalov played a big part in the team’s success, as he won all three games with a save percentage of .948. With a four-game schedule ahead for the next seven days, hopefully Bryzgalov can keep Philly’s winning ways intact against some strong opponents. In their first game of the week, the Flyers beat the visiting New York Islanders by a score of 6-3. It looked like Bryzgalov was back to his usual ways, as Josh …

JvR Hurt, Read Pots Pair In Win Over Islanders

After a road trip where they were shut out twice, the Flyers came home and handled the New York Islanders for a 6-3 win tonight. Matt Read, Claude Giroux, and Andrej Meszaros each recorded three-point performances, while Ilya Bryzgalov made 21 saves for the victory. Read, who ended a 12-game goal drought, had a pair of crucial tallies tonight. “It was a little struggle there for the last month,” Read said. “I just know I’ve got to work hard, keep working hard and things are going to start going my way. Two good plays by Mez (Meszaros) and Simmer (Wayne …

Atlantic Watch: 2/22-2/28

The end of their four-game road trip wasn’t pretty for the Flyers, as their only two points came in a shootout win against the Calgary Flames on Saturday night. With a pair of shutout losses, the Flyers have now been shut out five times this season. The Flyers hope two games against Eastern Conference teams below them in the standings will help them gain ground in a fight for home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. On Thursday, the Flyers failed to put a puck past Devan Dubnyk a single time in a 2-0 loss against the Edmonton Oilers. Taylor …

Atlantic Watch: 2/1-2/7

After a dominant victory on Thursday against one of the hotter teams in the league, the Flyers proceeded to drop their next handful of games to suffer their first three-game losing streak of the season. Poor starts and poor goaltending hurt the Flyers over the weekend, as the only other point they gained this week was from last night’s shootout loss. Hopefully for Philly, their play turns around, as they face three tough opponents over the next seven days. On Thursday, the Flyers handed the Nashville Predators a 4-1 loss in Philadelphia. Matt Read had the game-winner in the second …

Nabokov Stops 45 Shots, Islanders Hand Flyers 1-0 Shootout Loss

Evgeni Nabokov denied 45 shots in regulation and overtime before he stopped both of the Flyers’ shootout attempts to give the Islanders a 1-0 shootout win tonight at the Wells Fargo Center. Frans Nielsen, who signed a four-year extension worth a reported $11 million with New York earlier on Tuesday, had the decisive goal in the shootout, as John Tavares also scored on his shootout attempt to keep Ilya Bryzgalov’s shootout woes this season intact. Claude Giroux may have not produced a single point tonight, but it was one of his better performances of the season, as his line with …

Atlantic Watch: 1/18-1/24

The Flyers went 2-1-1 in a week that featured a lot of ups and downs for the guys in Orange and Black. After a week that featured a loss to the Islanders, a Scott Hartnell record a natural hat trick, and their first shootout win of the season, the Flyers are still trailing the Rangers for the top spot in the division. With one game this week, the Flyers look to gain ground in the division as well as beat a team they have already lost to twice this season. The Flyers started the week off with a 4-1 loss to …

Tavares, Nabokov Help Islanders End Losing Streak To Philly

Josh Bailey registered his 100th NHL point and recorded his first game-winning goal since December of 2010 with his goal in the second period, as the Islanders beat the Flyers by a 4-1 count on Thursday night. John Tavares had two assists to extend his point streak, while Evgeni Nabokov stopped 40 saves for the win to snap the Islanders’ eight-game losing streak to the Flyers. New York also put to rest a 13-game losing streak in Philadelphia which stretched as far back as a 4-2 victory on April 7, 2007. Matt Read scored the Flyers’ lone goal of the game and took over the …

Couturier Scores Late, Flyers Win Eighth Straight Against Islanders

Sean Couturier’s goal late in the contest gave the Flyers a 3-2 win over the New York Islanders tonight in Long Island. The rookie’s eighth goal of the season gave him his third straight game with a tally, as the Flyers earned their fourth win in their last five games. Goals from Scott Hartnell and Wayne Simmonds helped Sergei Bobrovsky earn his second straight win with a 33-save effort. John Tavares recorded his 15th goal of the season in the final minute of play and assisted on Kyle Okposo’s tally earlier in the period, while Andrew MacDonald notched a two-assist night to serve as the only …
