A Stick Tap to Boston and an Ode to Sports

Sports are an amazing thing. Games, and the athletic culture which wraps around society as part of the 24-hour news cycle, are needed in a variety of ways. This was all too obvious over the past couple of weeks. Sports, and the refuge it provides from the nastiness of the outside world, were a big reason that we, as a country, were able to move forward after the horrendous bombings that took place at the Boston Marathon on April 15. My thoughts are not here to belittle what happened on that fateful Monday. Three people lost their lives in the …

What Thornton was about to do to Bryzgalov, Bryz later did to the media

Saturday Morning Musings*

Something, something, intro paragraph. Fluff, yay! Let’s start off by facing the cold, hard truth. There is something like a 1% chance (with a 1% margin of error) that the Flyers could make the playoffs this season. Pointless wins are meaningless. Planning for next year is significantly more important at this point. So, what does that mean? Well, for starters, it does not mean that your loyalty as a fan is not contingent upon whether or not you want the team to win the remaining games of the season. The rational choice is to do what it takes to make …

Five Questions: Fixing the Flyers

Flyers Faithful revisited a former recurring feature, Five Questions, to address some current hot and important topics, including the draft, prospects, and the future of the Flyers. For this edition of Five Questions, we asked John Saquella, Jim Butler, James Centifonti, Joshua Janet, and our very own Jared Abbott to participate. Below, you will find their answers to today’s question. If you were currently the General Manager of the Flyers, how would you go about fixing the defense without decimating the core of the team? John Saquella: I feel, rather strongly, that a lot of the team’s defensive issues are due …

Rumors and rumblings! Thomas Vanek and Keith Yandle

With the trade deadline now just 24 hours away, the rumors are going to begin pouring in.  Big market teams, like the Philadelphia Flyers, are always in the mix when star players are reportedly available.  Today in the rumor mill, according to Dave Davis of Kuklas Korner, as originally reported by The Fourth Period, the Flyers have contacted the Buffalo Sabres and Phoenix Coyotes regarding Thomas Vanek and Keith Yandle. The Fourth Period writes, “Flyers GM Paul Holmgren has kicked the tires on Anaheim Ducks sniper Bobby Ryan, Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle, Dallas Stars right wing Jaromir Jagr and Buffalo …

Rumors and Rumblings: Brent Burns on the blue line?

With the trade deadline less than a week away, the rumor mill is kicking into full gear.  According to Frank Seravalli of the Daily News, Paul Holmgrem has reported interest in Brent Burns of the San Jose Sharks. Seravalli states “After Sharks GM Doug Wilson unloaded defenseman Douglas Murray to Pittsburgh on Monday, many pointed toward veteran blue liner Dan Boyle and linked him to the Flyers.  Turns out, Boyle was simply the red herring. Instead, the Flyers’ brass wanted a closer look at Brent Burns, among others” Brent Burns would be a welcome addition to the Philadelphia Flyers’ blue line, but …

Help Wanted

Here we are, Flyers fans. Offers to Ryan Suter and Zach Parise were procured and rejected, thankfully. A mega offer sheet to the tune of 14 years and $110 million dollars was matched by Nashville for all-world defenseman Shea Weber — a contract so large that it could cripple the Nashville franchise if they don’t sell out every game and make a deep playoff run. So what do the Flyers do now? More specifically, what does Paul Holmgren do now? We knew before that Homer has marbles (see “Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, trades of”). We know Homer’s cajones got …

Lost in translation: What that offseason news really means

The offseason is filled with plenty of news, speculation, absurd rumors, and hyperbole. So, we at Flyers Faithful have decided to take our best shot at deciphering some of the things that you’ve heard recently. News: This was a great pick by the Flyers! He’s an absolute steal with a lot of upside and projects to be a Mike Richards-type player. What it sounds like: Holy crap, we traded Mike Richards for Mike Richards last year and drafted another Mike Richards this year! What it really means: The kid plays two-way hockey and probably scored a nice shorthanded goal when he was fifteen …

2012 NHL Entry Draft - Round One

Some thoughts on round one

First off, kudos to everyone who covered the draft live last night. People may joke every time a tweet pops up about a GM working the phones but those reporters worked their butts off last night. Today will be even more hectic. Well done folks. The Penguins got a lot better on paper last night and that worries many people in the Atlantic Division. The Penguins also got a lot better on paper in 2010 when they reshaped their defense by acquiring Zbynek Michalek and Paul Martin. How did that work out? Michalek was traded back to the Phoenix Coyotes …

Atlantic Watch: 1/25-1/31

In their only game this week, the Flyers took part in yet another shootout. Unfortunately for Philly, it was unable to pull out a win. The Orange and Black did, however, keep up with the Rangers, who also lost in a shootout this week. The Flyers look forward to a difficult week ahead, as three of their four opponents are currently in the playoff picture. For a third time this season, the Flyers lost to the Winnipeg Jets. This time, however, the game was very defensive, as the Jets picked up a 2-1 shootout win in Philadelphia on Tuesday night. Chris …

Bryzgalov Returns to Phoenix, Wins 4-2

Returning to Phoenix for the first time since testing the free-agent market and signing with Philly this past Summer, Ilya Bryzgalov handed his former teammates a 4-2 loss — saving 36 shots in the process. Claude Giroux had another game-winner as both Matt Read (who totaled three points in a four-goal first period) and Scott Hartnell provided goals on the power play. Despite being outshot 38-30, the Flyers won their second game in as many days to help Bryzgalov shut up his former Phoenix buddies. Not even twenty seconds into the game, Brayden Schenn almost gave Philly the early edge. Charging towards Mike …
