Flyers Year In Review: The Ugly

Ah yes, we get to the fun part of my three-part year in review: The Ugly. I’ve discussed the Good and the Bad, but now it’s time to look at everything that was just so horrendous and led to the Flyers missing the playoffs. Without further ado… Ilya Bryzgalov: I told you that there would be more on Bryz later. This ugly version of Bryzgalov has nothing to do with his performance on the ice, but rather what happened to and with Bryzgalov off the ice. Since Bryz stepped foot in Philadelphia, he has been a lightning rod of criticism. …

2013 Year In Review: Braydon Coburn

Six foot-five inches, two hundred-twenty pounds, the ability to make the big hit, block a shot, lead a rush, and be the quarterback on a power play — Braydon Coburn possess all of those qualities and more. But what happened to Braydon Coburn during the 2013 season? To be quite blunt, Coburn’s struggles epitomized the Flyers 2013 season. Coburn came to Philadelphia in 2006, the last time the Flyers missed the playoffs prior to this year, via a trade with the Atlanta Thrashers for defenseman Alexei Zhitnik. He was the crown jewel of new general manager Paul Holmgren’s salary dump …

Flyers face decisions with crowded blueline…again

So I sit down to begin this article, and I write the headline “Flyers face decisions with crowded blueline” and then I think to myself… “wait, didn’t I write something similar last summer”. Of course I go take a look and, sure enough, I did. I wrote almost the same exact article last summer that I am about to begin now. It’s the same story, with different players, and some slightly different circumstances. The major difference is timing. Last summer I wrote the article after the Flyers had made their defensive acquisitions. They knew who they had and it was just …

Flyers Year In Review: The Bad

The Flyers season may have been a downer, but there were still positives to take out of it. Such positives were the strong play of Jakub Voracek, Luke Schenn, and the young kids on defense. Now, we take a look at the Bad. Braydon Coburn: Mistakenly, I chose Coburn as my dark-horse for the Norris trophy this year. Coburn has all the tools to be a top-tier defenseman. He has size, speed, offensive skills and awareness, as well as strong defensive prowess. Coburn plays all three phases of the game. Yet, this was not a good year for him. In …

2013 Year In Review: Kimmo Timonen

It was 2007 when the Flyers brought in both Kimmo Timonen and Scott Hartnell in a pre-draft trade with Nashville, instantly revitalizing the roster from head to toe. Upon joining the fold in Philly, both players immediately signed contract extensions, with Timonen’s coming in at six years and $38 million. This past season marked the final year of his initial contract, and one could argue that it might have been his best stint with the Orange and Black. Let’s get one thing out of the way right now: people age, and hockey players aren’t any different. Timonen is not the …

Atlantic Watch: Pens at the top of the Eastern Conference, Islanders clinch playoff spot, Rangers hanging on to eighth

After learning that they wouldn’t be in the playoffs for the second time in the last 18 seasons, the Flyers pulled off two straight wins. The Orange and Black look to end the campaign on a strong note with one more home game and one more away game. The Flyers were shut out by Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils on Thursday in a 3-0 loss at the Wells Fargo Center. Brodeur stopped 23 shots from the Flyers to end the Devils’ 10-game losing streak, while the trio of Ryan Carter, Matt D’Agostini, and Adam Henrique scored in Jersey’s …

Agony of de-foot: Timonen out for rest of season

It just keeps getting worser and worser for the Flyers blue line. Hours before a home game against the Boston Bruins, the club announced that veteran defenseman Kimmo Timonen will not play in the remaining three contests due to a broken right foot. Timonen, the presumptive winner of the Barry Ashbee Trophy as the team’s best defenseman through this slog of a 2013 schedule, had been the healthiest of all the club’s players to this point. But with no postseason on the horizon, it’s a smart move to drop the charade now and admit that an injury which could have …

Atlantic Watch: Flyers Surging, Islanders continue point streak, Rangers hanging on to playoff spot, Devils’ skid reaches 10 games

After putting themselves in a very big hole, the Philadelphia Flyers ended this week with two emphatic wins to show that they could be a playoff team. It might be too little too late, but the Orange and Black will carry their two-game winning streak into their upcoming seven-day stretch. Philly started the week with a 3-1 loss at home to the Ottawa Senators. Colin Greening put home the decisive tally with 5:36 remaining, as Robin Lehner made 24 stops in the win.
