The Tenth Day of Claudemas: 10 Players Who Should Have Won the Cup as Flyers

Here we are in December with little to do in this tough lockout time. What’s a blog to do? Well, it looks like a 12 Days of Christmas-themed series of posts is the way to go. But, we realize that all of you hockey fans aren’t into Christmas, so we’ve named it after the man nicknamed Orange Jesus and called it Claudemas. On the tenth day of Claudemas, Flyers Faithful gave to me…ten Flyers that Steve J. wishes he had seen win the Stanley Cup with the Flyers. Eric Desjardins Rico! Eric Desjardins was as reliable a defenseman as the …

The Second Day of Claudemas: Two Non Howe Twos

Here we are in December with little to do in this tough lockout time. What’s a blog to do? Well, it looks like a 12 Days of Christmas-themed series of posts is the way to go. But, we realize that all of you hockey fans aren’t into Christmas, so we’ve named it after the man nicknamed Orange Jesus and called it Claudemas. On the second day of Claudemas, Flyers Faithful gave to me…two Flyers who wore the number two that aren’t the great Mark Howe! Mark Howe finally made it into the Hockey Hall of Fame this year, and the …

As the world turns

Each of the 30 teams in the NHL shares one common goal: winning the Stanley Cup. Yet no two teams take the same route to the Cup. There are just too many variables involved. If it was as simple as following the plan that brought the reigning champ to victory, every team would inevitably go the same route but the fact of the matter is that it is not the case. Teams are restricted by any number of factors, including the salary cap, funds available, and/or the ability the draft and develop talent. In the case of a big market …

Flyers Mailbag #2

Welcome to the second installment of the Flyers Mailbag, where we take readers’ (not-so-serious) questions and answer them in the least sensible way possible. Many thanks to Steve Jacot (@Estebomb) for contributing to this edition. If you’d like to submit a question, feel free to tweet at me or comment here. From Nick Dobrowolski (@NickDobo): Is it wrong to sing the Brohymn, real loud and out of key, to try to drown out the lame Doop song after goals? Not at all. A lot of Flyers fans miss the old goal song. I, personally, curse Danny Briere every time I hear it. …

Mark, Azia, Ella, and Gordie Howe

Behind the Crest: Gordie, Mark, and Azia Howe

Hockey enthusiasts could tell you a thing or two about Gordie and Mark Howe. They know all about “Mr. Hockey” and his son, widely considered to be one of the greatest defensemen of all time. They can give you a laundry list of reasons as to why both men were so deserving of their respective Hall of Fame inductions. But someone very close to them, someone who knows both very well, can’t recall much of their careers. “To be totally honest, I can’t tell you my grandfather’s or father’s stats. I know from other people that they were both great …

Briere Nets Winner In Overtime, Flyers Take 1-0 Series Lead

After having a goal earlier in the overtime period waved off, Danny Briere potted the winner 4:36 into the extra frame for a 4-3 win and a 1-0 series advantage for the Flyers in their Eastern Conference Semifinals’ matchup with the New Jersey Devils. “Is it pressure? I think it’s fun,” Briere said of playoff hockey. “When I have the opportunity, like I’ve had the past few years here, I try to take advantage of the opportunities.” Minutes after he had a goal disallowed for kicking the puck into the back of the net, Briere received a Jakub Voracek pass at …

Atlantic Watch: 2/29-3/6

For the first time in awhile, the Flyers put together a string of wins this week, as they won all three of their contests. Ilya Bryzgalov played a big part in the team’s success, as he won all three games with a save percentage of .948. With a four-game schedule ahead for the next seven days, hopefully Bryzgalov can keep Philly’s winning ways intact against some strong opponents. In their first game of the week, the Flyers beat the visiting New York Islanders by a score of 6-3. It looked like Bryzgalov was back to his usual ways, as Josh …

Howe gives thanks on Tuesday

Prior to the Flyers’ 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday, Mark Howe spoke to a sellout crowd as his No. 2 was raised to the rafters. Flanked by his children, grandchildren, former wife and father Gordie, the 56-year-old spoke with grace and brevity. Below is a transcript of his remarks. “I stand before you today a proud yet humbled man.  I am being honored tonight in the presence of the two teams that have been a part of my life for the past 30 years.  In Detroit, I had the opportunity to play with the great Nick …

Giroux And Bryz Lead Flyers Past Wings

Ilya Bryzgalov came up huge again for the Flyers, as he stopped 37 shots in the Flyers’ 3-2 win against the visiting Detroit Red Wings tonight. On an evening where the Flyers’ organization retired Mark Howe’s number, Bryzgalov and Philly’s penalty kill showed up to give the Flyers’ their second straight one-goal game victory. “He’s been great for us the last month,” said Claude Giroux of Bryzgalov. “When he plays great, it’s motivation for us to step up and play great.” Giroux had a goal and an assist in the win, as he created scoring chances throughout the game. After his …
