Vokoun and Flyers already linked

With all this talk about Tomas Vokoun possibly being the best value for a goaltender upgrade for a potential Flyers’ Stanley Cup run, I thought I’d return to my role as Flyers Faithful historian and tell you how the current Florida Panthers goaltender and the Orange and Black are already linked. On February 6, 1997 — 14 years ago tonight — the Montreal Canadiens came to the CoreStates Center for what figured to be a routine mid-season tilt between two Eastern Conference clubs headed for playoff berths. At this point, since the franchise-altering Mark Recchi-for-LeClair-Desjardins-Dionne deal was consummated almost two years …

Flight Plan Week of 01.09.2011

The Philadelphia Flyers won all three of their games this past week, although two of them were against the New Jersey Devils and those four points were about as easy as they come for this team. The Flyers’ impressive win over the bruised and battered Detroit Red wings however, was a classic example of Peter Laviolette’s up-tempo left-wing lock system. The Flyers were constantly getting the puck deep through two periods of play and were relentless on the forecheck, out hitting and outshooting the Red Wings 22-18 and 32-27 respectively. The Flyers eventually pounded in three goals on Jimmy Howard …

Flight Plan 11.28.2010

Flight Plan is a column that takes a more in depth look at the Flyers’ upcoming opponents every week here at Flyers Faithful. After two solid performances to start the week, wins over the Montreal Canadiens and the Minnesota Wild, the Philadelphia Flyers lost two games in the shootout. These two entirely emotionless losses brought them down a peg in the standings in the Eastern Conference and the entire NHL as the Washington Capitals now have sole ownership of the best record and most points in the league. The Flyers also allowed their divisional and cross-state rival the Pittsburgh Penguins …

Upgrading via free agency

Given the Flyers’ current cap situation, they are unlikely to make a splash in free agency unless they manage to shed a really big contract or two without taking back salary. This shouldn’t be an issue, though, as they don’t need to target the Ilya Kovalchuk’s of this UFA class. They need to add affordable depth. The first thing the Flyers should do is to add some additional scoring punch to the third line and finally give Claude Giroux a viable, consistent threat on the wing. Vinnie Prospal is a reliable scorer that would have instant chemistry with Giroux. Prospal …
