Atlantic Watch: Penguins on winning streak, Devils snap losing streak, Islanders’ point streak ends

The Philadelphia Flyers lost their first two games this week to stretch their losing streak to three games before they edged out the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday for a pair of points. Philly will have a home-and-home with a struggling Devils club over the next few days, as they look to gain a spot in the Eastern Conference’s top eight. The Flyers finished their 2011-12 regular season with a pair of games that didn’t have any kind of effect on the standings, as they beat the Buffalo Sabres and lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins. It’s those same Penguins that the Flyers will play in the 2012 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, which starts tonight. Philly’s final home game of the regular season was also their final win, as they beat the visiting Sabres 2-1 on Thursday night. Flyers Fall Apart, Lose To Caps 5-2

Failing to tie the game at two after dominating the second period, the Flyers allowed three goals in a 2:30 minute span to start the third giving the Washington Capitals a 5-2 road win on Thursday night. Alex Ovechkin was the first star of the game as he scored two goals on three shots. Roman Hamrlik and Joel Ward recorded their first goals as members of the Caps, while Tomas Vokoun stopped 40 saves as Washington increased their franchise-best start to 6-0-0. Claude Giroux and Sean Couturier scored the goals for Philly, which got just 23 saves from Ilya Bryzgalov. …
