Prior to curating your opinions last week, I ran down a list of the players that the Flyers should keep heading into next season. This week, I will take a different approach, stating not what should happen but what may actually happen. Throughout yesterday’s trade deadline, the team remained relatively quiet, surfacing only to claim Adam Hall off of waivers to fill Max Talbot’s spot and to swap backup goalies. The Flyers aren’t a team that gets too comfortable outside of the playoffs. Sitting with less than a 10 percent chance of qualifying as of today, this might be just the second time since 1994 that they miss the postseason. When you compare the two teams, the amount of similarities makes you wonder if maybe we should have seen this coming. It starts from the beginning with the lack of identity and definition. The Flyers are just plain bad. I said it weeks ago and still believe it today. There was always the possibility of this happening. No training camp, combined with the loss of veteran leaders like Jaromir Jagr and Matt Carle with no one to replace them, led the Flyers to this situation. There was always a feeling that the Flyers could struggle, but never this drastically. The Philadelphia Flyers lost another pivotal game tonight in Tampa Bay, as the Lightning handed the visitors a 4-2 loss. Teddy Purcell deposited the game-winner halfway through the third period, while Steven Stamkos recorded his 200th goal in the NHL in a two-point effort. Max Talbot and Claude Giroux were the only Flyers to beat Anders Lindback, as Tampa Bay’s goaltender made 28 stops for the victory. The Philadelphia Flyers were able to extend their point streak to four games this week, as they earned a shootout loss to the Florida Panthers and an overtime win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Although they were dominated in Toronto, the Orange and Black did a good job of rebounding to earn their second road win of the year last night in Winnipeg. Heading into this past offseason, the Flyers two biggest free agents were Jaromir Jagr and Matt Carle. While they had discussions with both, the pursuit of Ryan Suter, Zach Parise, and Shea Weber at various times all contributed to the two ultimately accepting attractive deals with the Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning respectively. Additionally, James Van Riemsdyk was shipped to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Luke Schenn in an attempt to strengthen the blue line. Tom Sestito recorded his first career two-goal game with Philadelphia — overshadowing the return of defenseman Matt Carle to Philadelphia — as the Flyers defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning by a 2-1 score in their second meeting in the last nine days.
