Simmonds signs multi-year extension

The Philadelphia Flyers and winger Wayne Simmonds agreed to a multi-year contract extension on Thursday. No terms of the deal were disclosed, but according to a report from TSN’s Bob McKenzie late Wednesday night, the pact is in the neighborhood of $4 million per year over six seasons. “We are pleased to announce that we have agreed to a multi-year extension with Wayne Simmonds,” Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said.  “Wayne plays the game with courage and honor and we believe he will continue to be a very good winger for our organization.” Acquired on June 23, 2011 as part of …

Is it Giroux's time to be captain?

Point/Counterpoint: Is it Giroux’s time to be captain?

Welcome to another edition of Point/Counterpoint, where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes square off, debating an issue with their own unique style and flair. This week, Kim P and Craig F discuss the possibility of the Flyers naming Claude Giroux their new captain. Point: Kim P. If the chatter surrounding the Flyers isn’t about their goaltending issues, it’s something about the captaincy. As of right now, Chris Pronger is still the official team captain. Flyers Mailbag #1

Welcome to the first installment of the Flyers Mailbag, where we take readers’ (not-so-serious) questions and answer them in the least sensible way possible. If you’d like to submit a question, feel free to tweet at me or comment here. From Hal Greenblatt (@HMGreenblatt): Why does @Hartsy19 (Scott Hartnell) fall so often? It’s gravity, baby. Also, my brother had just purchased a JvR Winter Classic jersey (for the record, he has a penchant of purchasing jerseys and finding said player traded or released within two years of the purchase). But it was more than just the loss of that once-promising Jersey native that made my household sad; it was knowing the uber-talented van Riemsdyk will become a top-six forward for another team. It was knowing that another young player signed to a long-term …

Lost in translation: What that offseason news really means

The offseason is filled with plenty of news, speculation, absurd rumors, and hyperbole. So, we at Flyers Faithful have decided to take our best shot at deciphering some of the things that you’ve heard recently. News: This was a great pick by the Flyers! He’s an absolute steal with a lot of upside and projects to be a Mike Richards-type player. What it sounds like: Holy crap, we traded Mike Richards for Mike Richards last year and drafted another Mike Richards this year! What it really means: The kid plays two-way hockey and probably scored a nice shorthanded goal when he was fifteen …
