Carter and Richards, together again

It wasn’t that long ago — May 24, 2010 to be exact — that Jeff Carter and Mike Richards simultaneously reached the zenith of their respective careers. It was the night the Flyers finally dispatched the Montreal Canadiens in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals here. But 13 months later, it all exploded on a day which will live in infamy, as Carter and his monster multi-year deal was shuttled to Columbus, and Richards and his mega contract was sent off to Los Angeles. Eight months to the day we saw a visibly shaken Paul Holmgren discuss why those …

This Week in Flyers History 2/12-2/18

The continuation of a new weekly series here at Flyers Faithful, “This Week in Flyers History” aims to provide historical information on Flyers games of the past with some kind of significance, using pictures and videos where appropriate. February 12, 1984 Canucks 6, Flyers 5 – Despite a 20-4 shot edge in the first period and leads of 2-0, 3-1 and 5-3, Philly allows Vancouver to score three straight in the third period to win, culminating when Tiger Williams tallied with 1:56 remaining in regulation. Pelle Lindbergh, who surrendered six goals on just 29 shots, is in the midst of suffering …

Point/Counterpoint: Trade deadline moves

Point: Tweak the roster By Steve J The Flyers miss the hell out of Chris Pronger.  You know it, I know it, Trent Klatt knows it.  The trade rumors that have circulated for the past couple of months have revolved around the defense.  Ryan Suter, Shea Weber, Tim Gleason, and Luke Schenn’s names have been floated as potential candidates.  The cost for most of these guys would be at least one young forward, which happens to be the Flyers’ greatest asset.  Well, in the words of the immortal sage Admiral Ackbar, it’s a trap! It is absolutely not worth it …

3-on-3 Weekly Update: 2.07.2012

Welcome to this week’s edition of 3-on -3, where we look back at the week that was for the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers are coming off a disappointing week in which they were 1-2-1 in four games and were only able to get three out of a possible eight points. Let’s get to this week’s 3 “hot” and 3 “not” players. 3”Hot”: Wayne Simmonds: The former second-round pick of the LA Kings had a good week lighting the lamp, scoring 4 goals in four games and setting a new career high in the process with 17 goals on the year. …

Simmer Scores Twice, Flyers Beat Surging Predators

A strong, hard-working effort from the Flyers led to their impressive 4-1 over the visiting Nashville Predators tonight. Wayne Simmonds put home a pair of goals in the win, as Ilya Bryzgalov made 26 saves for his ninth game of the season where he allowed one goal against or less. Claude Giroux had a goal and an assist, while Kimmo Timonen had a pair of assists in a win that extended the Flyers’ point streak to five games and handed the Predators their second loss in their last 10 games. Ryan Suter, who will most likely remain in Nashville following the trade deadline, had …

Snapshots

1. Laud Bob, learn from Bob When Dmitry Chesnokov interviewed Sergei Bobrovsky for Puck Daddy this offseason, he asked him about Ilya Bryzgalov’s contract. “What I understood from last season is that if you play well, show the result, then you play for the first team,” said Bobrovsky. “If not, you are benched. A contract is not playing, a person is.” Bobrovsky put his head down, kept quiet, and played hard. The presence of Bryzgalov did not intimidate him. That alone speaks volumes about just how much the young goalie matured from the previous postseason. While Bob may not get …

Five Questions: How would you grade the Flyers for first half of the season?

Flyers Faithful asked Bill Meltzer from HockeyBuzz, NHL.com, and PhiladelphiaFlyers.com, Joshua Janet from GCobb, Michael DeNicola from Orange and Black Pack, and our very own Bob H five questions about the second half of the season. We are very grateful that they took the time to share their opinions and predictions with us. Each day of this week, we will run the answers to one of those questions. Today’s question is: How would you grade the Flyers for first half of the season? What needs to change and what needs to remain the same? Bill Meltzer: I addressed this in a …

Reevaluating (New Year and such)

I sit here with my cup of coffee (diluted with peppermint mocha creamer cause that’s how I roll) and look at my calendar that shows December with an old-fashioned painting of a hockey scene (gift from my dad last Christmas). Next to me is the 2012 calendar, this time with photos of the Flyers. It’s weird enough that Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, and Darroll Powe are all taking space in said calendar, but as I still like all three of them and miss them to some extent, I don’t mind. It’s almost a new year. 2012 supposedly will bring the …

Flight Plan 12.04.2011

The Philadelphia Flyers won both ends of a back-to-back situation for the second time this season, beating both the Anaheim Ducks and the Phoenix Coyotes, and now sit just three points away from tying the Pittsburgh Penguins, whom they will face later this week, for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. With all the injuries the Flyers have taken recently, especially to their blue line, it’s great to see them able to soldier on and pick up valuable points on the road. Claude Giroux scored a goal last night, adding his 15th goal and 32nd point on the year, …

The ‘How’ of Homer

When Paul Holmgren took over as the general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers on October 22, 2006, I received numerous messages from my friends who grew up as fans of the Hartford Whalers. Those messages ranged from, “Good luck with that,” to “What a terrible choice” to the simple but poignant, “Bwahahahahaha.” These were people jaded by the abysmal record that the Whalers posted during his tenure as Hartford’s coach and his brief stint as GM in the years that eventually led up to Hartford’s relocation to Carolina. (His DUI and stint at Betty Ford likely did not help matters …
