There is nothing wrong with good news regarding the lockout; but if the season were to get underway soon, would you be comfortable starting the cup run with the defense as it stands today? Jannik Hansen hasn’t missed a single game for the Vancouver Canucks since the start of the 2010-2011 campaign. After he posted 16 goals and 23 assists in the 2011-2012 regular season, Hansen notched a goal in Vancouver’s Western Conference Quarterfinals’ match-up with the Los Angeles Kings before they were dismissed in five games. Hansen was picked 287th overall by the Canucks in the ninth round of the 2004 NHL Draft, one slot after the Philadelphia Flyers selected left winger Triston Grant. The Philadelphia Flyers had their dreams of acquiring Shea Weber crushed yesterday, as the Nashville Predators matched Philly’s offer sheet to keep the elite defenseman in Tennessee. One reason why this is so painful to the Flyers’ faithful is due to the fact that Matt Carle signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning earlier in the month. Carle spent parts of four seasons with the Orange and Black thanks to Philly’s trade with the Lightning back in 2008, where the Flyers acquired the blue liner in exchange for Steve Downie, a fourth-round pick in the 2009 draft (drafting Alex Hutchings), and Steve Eminger. …

The Philadelphia Flyers tried to add one of the best defensemen in the NHL to the roster by signing restricted free agent Shea Weber to a 14 year, $110 million offer sheet. Their hopes were dashed on Tuesday when the Nashville Predators announced their decision to match the Flyers’ offer. The Predators had until 11:30 pm Wednesday to match the Flyers’ offer. If they had decided against it, they would have received four first-round draft picks as compensation. After weeks of speculation, the Flyers signed restricted free agent (RFA), defenseman Shea Weber to an offer sheet. General manager Paul Holmgren issued a statement on Thursday morning confirming the move: “The Philadelphia Flyers have signed restricted free agent (D) Shea Weber to an offer sheet. There will be no further comment at this time.” TSN’s Darren Dreger reported it is for 14 years in excess of $100 million. In fact, the only NHL game Ramholt ever took part in was as a member of the Calgary Flames in the club’s 4-1 defeat to the Anaheim Ducks on November 29, 2007.
