Minor League Update: 1/30-2/5

The Phantoms ended their five-game losing streak this week, as they went 1-1-0 in a pair of games in Adirondack. Despite a win in their first game of the week, the Phantoms lost their second game to drop their record to 2-7-0 in their last nine games. Adirondack is looking for a pair of wins in the upcoming week, as they play the team they beat this week twice on the road. Atlantic Watch: 1/25-1/31

In their only game this week, the Flyers took part in yet another shootout. Unfortunately for Philly, it was unable to pull out a win. The Orange and Black did, however, keep up with the Rangers, who also lost in a shootout this week. The Flyers look forward to a difficult week ahead, as three of their four opponents are currently in the playoff picture. For a third time this season, the Flyers lost to the Winnipeg Jets. This time, however, the game was very defensive, as the Jets picked up a 2-1 shootout win in Philadelphia on Tuesday night. Chris …

Minor League Update: 1/23-1/29

With a trio of losses this week, the Adirondack Phantoms extended their losing streak to five games. Over their five-game losing streak, the Phantoms have been out scored 20-7, as the team has suffered two four-goal losses. The Phantoms hope the AHL’s All-Star break will end their misery as of late, as they have a three-game home stand over the next several days. For their third straight loss, the Phantoms dropped a 5-1 decision at the Verizon Wireless Arena to the Manchester Monarchs (Los Angeles Kings’ AHL affiliate) on Wednesday night. Jordan Nolan posted the game-winner 11:31 into the middle stanza …

Live Hockey

So, I saw the game in Nashville this past Saturday. Wait, that’s too subdued. SO! I SAW the GAME in NASHVILLE last week and it WAS AWESOME! Yeah, that’s better. Well, Flyers lost and that sucked royally and even sadder was the consensus of the Flyers fans around me when we found out that Bryzgalov would be in goal. “Yeah, we’re gonna lose.” But that’s an entirely different discussion. I haven’t been to a live NHL game since March of last year, and any live hockey game since May of last year. The Bridgestone Arena in Nashville is really nice. …

Atlantic Watch: 1/11-1/17

The Flyers won two of their three games this week, as they finished the week by handling the free-falling Minnesota Wild. Philly looks forward to a difficult week, as two of their four games are against division leaders in the Eastern Conference. The Orange and Black started off with a 3-2 in New York against the Islanders. Sean Couturier scored with 1:30 left in regulation to extend the …

Minor League Update: 1/8-1/14

The Phantoms won both of their games this week and are inching their way to the top of the standings. The pair of victories marked the first time the Phantoms had won back-to-back games in regulation since their wins against the Syracuse Crunch (the Anaheim Ducks’ AHL affiliate) on November 30th and the Norfolk Admirals (the Tampa Bay Lightning AHL affiliate) on December 2nd. Adirondack looks to add on to their winning streak with a trio of divisional games this week. Friday the 13th is usually unlucky, but it proved fortuitous for the Phantoms as they beat the visiting Hamilton …

Pekka Rinne made 36 saves for his fourth straight victory. Sean Couturier and Wayne Simmonds each had a goal and an assist, as Ilya Bryzgalov dropped his second straight decision with a 21-save effort for Philly. Minutes into the game, the Flyers nearly found themselves trailing 1-0 on what looked to be a garbage …

Friday the 13th (that bodes well)

Today (Thursday night, really) is my birthday. I share it with Claude Giroux and we won’t talk about the years in between I and the All-Star superstar ginger. It’s the first big snow here in Illinois and I’m driving down to Nashville tomorrow (Friday the 13th, oh dear) to see the Preds and Flyers play in Music City. A very full couple of days. I have been racking my brain on why I, an English teacher, English nerd and voracious reader, am having a heck of a time finishing The Final Call by Kerry Fraser. It is not an exceptionally long …

Sean Couturier’s goal late in the contest gave the Flyers a 3-2 win over the New York Islanders tonight in Long Island. The rookie’s eighth goal of the season gave him his third straight game with a tally, as the Flyers earned their fourth win in their last five games. Goals from Scott Hartnell and Wayne Simmonds helped Sergei Bobrovsky earn his second straight win with a 33-save effort. John Tavares recorded his 15th goal of the season in the final minute of play and assisted on Kyle Okposo’s tally earlier in the period, while Andrew MacDonald notched a two-assist night to serve as the only …
