Flight Plan Week of 12.12.2010

As of writing this preview the Philadelphia Flyers have gotten five of the six points available through three of the four games thus far this week and will try for seven of eight against the Boston Bruins today. Unfortunately, the Flyers should have gotten all six of the points available however they coughed up a third period lead for the second time in two weeks and this was a little bit more distressing. The Flyers had a two-goal lead going into the final stanza and they even extended it to a three-goal lead when they promptly fell apart and allowed the San …

Flight Plan Week of 12.05.2010

The Philadelphia Flyers had just two games this past week. The Flyers were shut out by the Boston Bruins, in the first meeting of both the season and since last year’s historic playoff series, and beat the New Jersey Devils by a score of 5-3. This week the Flyers will continue their busy schedule with their fourth four-game week this season against some very hungry teams in the New York Islanders, the San Jose Sharks, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and a rematch against the Boston Bruins. Since the Flyers had been on a short skid of late that they ended …

Flight Plan Week of 11.14.2010

Flight Plan is a new column that will take a more in depth look at the Flyers’ upcoming opponents every week here at Flyers Faithful. The Flyers are playing a similar brand to the type of hockey they were playing when they started the Stanley Cup Playoffs last year. They worked hard, scored key goals, got contributions from different players every night. They rolled with that style right on through to the Stanley Cup Finals and came within just two victories of ending a 35 year drought. The entire team was firing on all cylinders last year and right now, …

Flight Plan week of 10.31.2010

Flight Plan is a new column that will take a more in depth look at the Flyers’ upcoming opponents every week here at Flyers Faithful. The Philadelphia Flyers seemed to have wanted to start celebrating Halloween early this past week and got off to a rough start by dropping a 2-1 decision to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Flyers showed up in their hockey player costumes unfortunately they were also dressed as mindless, decaying, flesh hungry corpses while the Blue Jackets were dressed up as Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson playing Columbus and Tallahasse, their respective characters from Zombieland. In …

The morning after: Islanders @ Flyers 10.30.10

“The morning after” is a review of the previous night’s Flyers’ game which, in theory, provides a more objective perspective on the game. I think of the Islanders as a measuring stick for your team.  Meaning if your team loses to the Islanders, they suck and will end up being moved to Las Vegas.  If your team wins, then they get two points.  Good deal, huh? This was the Flyers Halloween game, and there were some frightful things going on in this game.  Chief among them: Rick DiPietro’s pads (although for a good cause) and, oh yeah, his play.  I …

Flight Plan: Week of 10.24.2010

Flight Plan is a new column that will take a more in depth look at the Flyers’ upcoming opponents every week here at Flyers Faithful. After winning their home opener, the Philadelphia Flyers were absolutely abysmal in two of the three losses against teams that had played the night before. The Flyers lost in regulation against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Anaheim Ducks before exploding offensively on Saturday night against a team off to one of the hottest starts in the league in the Toronto Maple Leafs who they beat 5-2. Mike Richards notched his first …

Propp has been where Howard is now

When it comes to Philadelphia sports, good most always isn’t good enough. The mantra is amplified when players who are identified as leaders in terms of how gaudy their statistics are, don’t come through as often as is demanded. It is something Ryan Howard is going through right now as the Phillies strive towards their third consecutive World Series berth, but it is familiar territory that one respected former Philadelphia Flyer knows well. Brian Propp can surely relate. Howard finished the five-game 2008 World Series by hitting 6-for-21 (.286) with three home runs and six batted in, spurring the Phillies …

The morning after: Flyers vs. Islanders 9.29.10

“The morning after” is a review of the previous night’s Flyers’ game which, in theory, provides a more objective perspective on the game. The Flyers celebrated their first regulation win of the preseason last night. It was the second consecutive game that did not go to a shootout. Whew. The team faced off against the New York Islanders, who were playing their first game of the preseason. This was an expected win for the Flyers, as the Islanders dressed many of their prospects. Perhaps the biggest story of the night was that Ville Leino, Blair Betts, and Johan Backlund returned …
