Could the Flyers be targeting Bernier?

As the Flyers are now nearly eight million dollars over the salary cap, it is likely that buyouts are looming. Should the rumors of the Ilya Bryzgalov buyout be truthful, the question is: who will take over the vacant Goaltender position? In the past few days, a name that keeps resurfacing is that of current Los Angeles Kings backup Goaltender Jonathan Bernier.  Stuck behind the all-star brick wall known as Jonathan Quick, Bernier has had limited time to showcase his skills between the pipes. As he is set to become a restricted free agent, Bernier would no doubt like to …

The National Hockey League announced some of the winners of this year’s awards today. In a slightly different setting than the past few years, they did so in a low-key panel show starting at 5:00 PM on the NHL Network.  In previous years, they had a large show in Las Vegas that felt more like the Grammy’s. Today the winners of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, Frank J. Selke Trophy, King Clancy Memorial Trophy, Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, the Jack Adams Award, the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award, the NHL Foundation Player Award and the General Manager of the Year …

Flyers, Giroux talk contract extension

According to TSN.com, the Philadelphia Flyers have begun preliminary discussions with Claude Giroux in order to extend his contract. Details are slim, but we know that currently the Flyers are over the salary cap as of right now.  As well as the fact that the team has just acquired defenseman Mark Streit from the New York Islanders.  Streit will also need a new contract, further pushing the issue of the salary cap. Giroux has one year remaining on his current contract and is scheduled to become a restricted free agent after the 2013-14 season.  He is set to make $3,750,000 …
