Future Flyers Report: 11/12

The Flyers used two of their seven draft picks in this year’s draft on forwards. The first was center Scott Laughton, who they selected in the first round at 20th overall. The second was Taylor Leier, the only winger selected by Philly in the draft, in the fourth round at 117th overall. Although Laughton plays with the Oshawa Generals in the OHL and Leier plays in the WHL with the Portland Winterhawks, both skaters have participated in the same number of games due to Laughton in the midst of a 10-game suspension. With 14 games apiece, Leier has produced 14 …

Future Flyers Report: 11/5

Despite a cloud of suspicion for his late Summer activities, Nick Cousins leads all Philadelphia Flyers prospects in scoring so far this season. The fact he has played more games than any other forward on the list shouldn’t take away from what he has done to this point. Not only does he lead his team — the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds — in points, which is currently a margin of 10 over right winger Sergey Tolchinsky, Cousins sits seventh overall in the Ontario Hockey League with 27 points over 18 games. The center has registered at least one point in 15 different contests this …

CBA 101: Mailbag questions while you’re stuck inside

Is anyone reading this? Does anyone have power? Is the world over? Hurricane Sandy is here after all, and we are quickly approaching the end of the world on December 21, 2012. If you didn’t see our Tim McManus’ article last week on mailbags, you should definitely check it out. With that said, it’s time for some mailbag questions of my own! From reader Mike Tomon, “Why do I see a cap hit of $100,000 for Oskars Bartulis for the Flyers?”. This is good question Mike, and one I expect other fans will wonder if/when we ever have hockey again and …

Point/Counterpoint: Holmgren’s best move to date

Welcome to another edition of Point/Counterpoint, where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes square off, debating an issue with their own unique style and flair. This week, Kevin C and Steve J debate what has been Paul Holmgren’s best move during his tenure as General Manager. Point, Kevin: The signing of Claude Giroux to his current three year $11.25 million is Paul Holmgren’s best move to date. It’s probably an unconventional choice. I’d expect that most people would pick the flashy acquisitions: Pronger, Hartnell and Timonen, Briere, Voracek, Couturier and Cousins. I get it, they are the sexy picks. I, however, am a risk averse …

Future Flyers Report: 10/22

FORWARDS: Thanks to the fact the OHL is the league furthest into their 2012-2013 season, skaters from the Ontario Hockey League lead both lists in this week’s Future Flyers Report standings. Both Nick Cousins and Scott Laughton have played 13 games so far this season, but Cousins has two more goals and four more assists than Laughton for a six-point lead at the top of the forwards’ list. Andrew Rowe and Marcel Noebels come in third and fourth, as they are the top scoring Flyers’ prospects in the ECHL. A rather surprising stat is Eric Wellwood’s one assist in four games for …

Flyers System Inventory: Forwards

Last week we took an in depth look at the defensemen on the farm.  This week we’ll be taking a look at the forwards. AHL/ECHL Jason Akeson, Right Wing,  22, signed as free agent in 2011. 2011-2012:  76gp  14g  41a  55pts Akeson proved he could handle the jump to the American Hockey League after an outstanding performance as an overaged talent in juniors. He had a solid debut in the AHL for a rookie, but his NHL Equivalency  for his performance last season is 26 points over a full season which is an average third line talent in the National …

Flyers Faithful’s 10 top Flyers prospects

I’ve decided to take a more traditional look  prospects this year instead of grading them with the help of NHLE because goalies and defenders are undervalued with NHLE. I decided to evaluate them mainly on three criteria: 1) NHL ceiling 2) Likelihood of reaching ceiling 3) Proximity to NHL “NHL ceiling” is essentially a prospect’s maximum potential, but not everyone reaches their ceiling. I tend to prefer younger, higher ceiling prospects, but it’s important to factor in whether they are likely to reach that ceiling or not. So a player with a low ceiling — but a higher potential — …

Courtesy of the Philadelphia Flyers G Anthony Stolarz Q: Do you have any expectations of this week? “I’m just going to take it in and enjoy it. It’s my first camp and I’m just going to go with it and see what happens.” Q: Have you set any goals for this week? “Just in the scrimmage not to give up any goals and stop every puck I can.” Q: How important is it to know these guys off the ice? “It’s very important. You might be playing with these guys. You look around and there a lot of guys playing …
