Flyers Year In Review: The Bad

The Flyers season may have been a downer, but there were still positives to take out of it. Such positives were the strong play of Jakub Voracek, Luke Schenn, and the young kids on defense. Now, we take a look at the Bad. Braydon Coburn: Mistakenly, I chose Coburn as my dark-horse for the Norris trophy this year. Coburn has all the tools to be a top-tier defenseman. He has size, speed, offensive skills and awareness, as well as strong defensive prowess. Coburn plays all three phases of the game. Yet, this was not a good year for him. In …

Atlantic Watch: 2/22-2/28

The end of their four-game road trip wasn’t pretty for the Flyers, as their only two points came in a shootout win against the Calgary Flames on Saturday night. With a pair of shutout losses, the Flyers have now been shut out five times this season. The Flyers hope two games against Eastern Conference teams below them in the standings will help them gain ground in a fight for home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. On Thursday, the Flyers failed to put a puck past Devan Dubnyk a single time in a 2-0 loss against the Edmonton Oilers. Taylor …

On Competing and Conceiting: Trade Deadline thoughts

Blame it on the fact that what I do for my bread and butter is sit for 40 hours a week in front of a 13″ TV and digest a constant stream of information. This was not a national holiday for me, and its responsibilities no different from any other. The reality of days like today is that it is nothing more than a last-ditch opportunity for clubs teetering on the brink of something to appear like they are doing everything to tip the scales in their favor. So when Paul Holmgren or any man in charge of the other …

Read Gives Flyers 5-4 Shootout Win In Calgary

Matt Read gave the Flyers the decisive goal in the fifth round of a 5-4 shootout win over the Calgary Flames tonight at the Scotiabank Saddledome. After he kicked his left skate up in the air to fake out Miikka Kiprusoff, Read ripped a shot into the top right corner of the net for the Flyers’ second dramatic victory of the week. “I was looking shot the whole way,” said …

Horrible Second Period Leads To Flyers’ 2-0 Loss In Edmonton

A horrendous middle stanza and a strong performance from Devan Dubnyk helped the Edmonton Oilers beat the visiting Flyers by a score of 2-0 tonight. Taylor Hall’s power-play goal only minutes into the second period was enough for an Edmonton victory, as the Flyers ran into a second straight amazing goalie performance from an unexpected source. In the first and third periods, the Flyers outshot the Oilers 29-15. In the second period, however, the Oilers earned a 15-6 shot advantage and potted the game’s only goals. The Flyers had a strong start and a strong finish, but there inexplicable lull …

Wandell: “Shocked is the right word”

The following is a translated excerpt from a story originally published on hockeysverige.se: Södertälje guys Tom Wandell and Nicklas Grossman were not only teammates in Dallas Stars, they also shared the apartment. Last week, however, told that Grossman has surprisingly become traded to Philadelphia. Surprised is probably the wrong word. Shocked is it the right word, says Wandell to hockeysverige.se. Dallas Stars have had a rough season in the NHL. Today, the team first in tenth place in the Eastern Conference and thus there is a clear summary that they miss the playoffs. In the days did Dallas also get …
