Trenton Update: 11/16-11/22

The Trenton Titans split their two games in Elmira against the Jackals last weekend to snap a long losing streak. The six-game losing streak that lasted three weeks, and saw five losses to the Reading Royals, has dropped the Titans to 12th in the Eastern Conference. Trenton looks to win three out of their last four with two home games this weekend against a pair of opponents who aren’t the Royals or Jackals. The Titans ended their losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Jackals last week at First Arena. After failing to score a single goal for the Kalamazoo Wings …

Future Flyers Report: 11/19

Derek Mathers is one of the tougher prospects in the Philadelphia Flyers’ system. With 47 penalty minutes in 24 games, Mathers is currently 14th in the Ontario Hockey League in time spent in the sin bin. He’s engaged in three fights so far this season and he’s won two of them in convincing fashion. In a Peterborough Petes’ 5-1 loss to the Oshawa Generals, Mathers took out his frustration on Scott Sabourin in the Flyers’ prospect’s first fight of the 2012-2013 regular season. After he fought the Owen Sound Attack’s Daniel Zweep in an even bout in Peterborough’s 5-4 shootout loss …

Trenton Update: 11/9-11/15

In a schedule quirk, the Trenton Titans’ last five games have all come against the Reading Royals. The Titans lost every single one of those contests and are currently on a six-game losing streak, as they have gained only one point in the process. Three of Trenton’s losses to the Royals came this past weekend, as the club was minutes away from ending their losing streak. After coming up short in both of the clubs’ meetings last week, the Titans dropped last Friday’s meeting in a 2-1 affair at the Sun National Bank Center. Bryan Haczyk leveled the game at one with his third …

Future Flyers Report: 11/12

The Flyers used two of their seven draft picks in this year’s draft on forwards. The first was center Scott Laughton, who they selected in the first round at 20th overall. The second was Taylor Leier, the only winger selected by Philly in the draft, in the fourth round at 117th overall. Although Laughton plays with the Oshawa Generals in the OHL and Leier plays in the WHL with the Portland Winterhawks, both skaters have participated in the same number of games due to Laughton in the midst of a 10-game suspension. With 14 games apiece, Leier has produced 14 …

Trenton Update: 11/2-11/8

The Trenton Titans started the season strong, as they won their first four games and four of their first five. Unfortunately, they have lost their last three games and have dropped in the standings. In a home-and-home with the Reading Royals this week, the Washington Capitals’ affiliate, Trenton failed to gain a single point in the standings while being outscored 6-3. The first loss came on Friday night, when the Titans lost 4-2 at the Sun National Bank Center. Alex Berry had the decisive goal for Reading, as his second goal of the season came with 51 seconds left in the …

Future Flyers Report: 11/5

Despite a cloud of suspicion for his late Summer activities, Nick Cousins leads all Philadelphia Flyers prospects in scoring so far this season. The fact he has played more games than any other forward on the list shouldn’t take away from what he has done to this point. Not only does he lead his team — the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds — in points, which is currently a margin of 10 over right winger Sergey Tolchinsky, Cousins sits seventh overall in the Ontario Hockey League with 27 points over 18 games. The center has registered at least one point in 15 different contests this …

Future Flyers Report: 10/22

FORWARDS: Thanks to the fact the OHL is the league furthest into their 2012-2013 season, skaters from the Ontario Hockey League lead both lists in this week’s Future Flyers Report standings. Both Nick Cousins and Scott Laughton have played 13 games so far this season, but Cousins has two more goals and four more assists than Laughton for a six-point lead at the top of the forwards’ list. Andrew Rowe and Marcel Noebels come in third and fourth, as they are the top scoring Flyers’ prospects in the ECHL. A rather surprising stat is Eric Wellwood’s one assist in four games for …

Trenton Update: 10/12-10/18

Last season, the Trenton Titans finished dead last out of the 20 teams in the ECHL with 21 wins and 52 points over 72 games. During their time at the bottom of the league last year, the squad only produced one winning streak that was three games or longer. Just three games into the 2012-13 season the Titans have already matched that total, as they sit atop the “E” with a record of 3-0-0. Six other teams in the league are undefeated, but none of those clubs have played three games yet. Head coach Vince Williams believes there are several …

Titans beat Reading, lose Hovinen

The Trenton Titans stayed undefeated with their 3-1 win over the Reading Royals last night at the Sun National Bank Center, but they lost Philadelphia Flyers’ goaltending prospect Niko Hovinen in the process. Scott Wedgewood replaced Hovinen early in the second period and didn’t allow a single goal against, while Marcel Noebels potted the game-winning goal later in the period. Andy Bohmbach led all players with two points, as the Titans improved to 3-0-0 for the best record in the ECHL. After he stopped 10 of the 11 shots thrown at him in the first period, Hovinen denied the first …

Flyers System Inventory: Goaltending

It’s the third and final installment of our system inventory. This week we close it out by looking at the goalies on the farm. As a reminder, we kicked it off by doing an inventory on the defense and followed it up last week with an inventory of forwards. AHL: Cal Heeter, 23, signed as free agent in 2012. 2011-2012: 32 games played 2.45 goals against average .918 save percentage Heeter was the starting goalie for the Ohio State Buckeyes over the previous two seasons. During that time, he was one of the CCHA’s top goalies despite playing behind a …
