Future Flyers Weekly Report

The Future Flyers Weekly Report follows the weekly progress of Flyers prospects playing in the various leagues throughout North America. Forwards: The Phantoms kicked off their season this week with a 6-3 win against the Connecticut Whale. Many forward prospects contributing with the scoring. Flyers top prospect, Brayden Schenn, contributed with a couple of assists and was named the second star of the match. Mike Testwuide also chipped in with two points, finishing with a goal and an assist. Luke Pither and Eric Wellwood each scored their first goal of the season. Flyers waive three, some thoughts

TSN confirms that the Flyers placed forward Blair Betts and defensemen Matt Walker and Oskars Bartulis on waivers today. Paul Holmgren confirmed that Brayden Schenn was sent to the Phantoms as well. Cap reasons aside, there’s no reason to rush Schenn. Giving him some time in the AHL where he can play more minutes per game until he completely dominates the league is a worthwhile decision for such a precious investment. It worked wonders for Claude Giroux and should do the same for Schenn. It’s a surprise to see Betts waived, as his $700k salary made him the most affordable …

Discussing the slump

Last night, ProHockeyTalk published three reasons why the Flyers are struggling. Quickly summed up, they believe the Flyers aren’t desperate enough, the scoring has dried up, and the team can’t seem to close out games in the third period. PHT also points out that the goaltending is not to blame here. For the most part, I agree with the article but I also think it goes a bit deeper than that. The Flyers are in self-preservation mode. The memory of all the fatigue and injuries suffered towards the end of the ’10 season and throughout the playoffs is once again fresh …

Atlantic Watch: 2/23-3/1

Despite playing two pathetic games, the Flyers still found a way to come out with a win at the end of the week. After blowing a two-goal lead in the third period, Andrej Meszaros was able to save the Flyers from embarrassment by scoring in overtime on Thursday finalizing the score at 4-3. Thanks to several hectic events on Saturday (Chris Pronger and Oskars Bartulis injured, Erik Gustafsson making his NHL debut, and James van Riemsdyk briefly being sent down to the Phantoms), the Flyers were beat by a team that shouldn’t even be in the same league as them. The Ottawa Senators capitalized on only …

RICE & MICE: Shoulder instability

Oskars Bartulis suffered a shoulder injury in last Tuesday’s overtime loss to the Phoenix Coyotes after a late hit when, then Coyotes forward, Scottie Upshall sent Bartulis head and shoulder first into the boards. Bartulis left the game and did not return. The next injury update on Bartulis left many fans scratching their heads when they heard that he was out indefinitely with left shoulder “instability” and would likely need surgery. What’s up with that, you ask? The shoulder is an awesome joint. It is blessed with incredible range of motion to allow you to raise it above your head, …
