Q: How long have you known he’s had a knee problem? “Obviously Chris has played a long time. This has been an issue probably for the last month or so for him that’s been nagging. He’s been playing through it up until this recent bout with his virus. As I said in my statement earlier, we kind of believed that through continuing the rehabilitation that he’s been doing on that, that he does on a daily basis anyway, and some medicine, that it would start to feel better. But Chris saw the doctor yesterday and had another MRI, and we …
Rare virus, spread to knee, to keep Pronger out for one month
The Philadelphia Flyers are apparently on the forefront of a new medical breakthrough. On Monday afternoon, general manager Paul Holmgren revealed that defenseman and captain Chris Pronger, who has missed the last four games with a virus, apparently will be out of the lineup for another month following surgery on his left knee. “Chris will have surgery on his left knee tomorrow afternoon. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Peter DeLuca. The procedure will clean out some loose particles that have given Chris some problems over the last month or so,” Holmgren said. “We were hopeful that the time missed with …
The ‘How’ of Homer
When Paul Holmgren took over as the general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers on October 22, 2006, I received numerous messages from my friends who grew up as fans of the Hartford Whalers. Those messages ranged from, “Good luck with that,” to “What a terrible choice” to the simple but poignant, “Bwahahahahaha.” These were people jaded by the abysmal record that the Whalers posted during his tenure as Hartford’s coach and his brief stint as GM in the years that eventually led up to Hartford’s relocation to Carolina. (His DUI and stint at Betty Ford likely did not help matters …

Five Reasons I Love The Flyers: Kevin Keating
Kevin Keating is a knowledgable hockey fan who I had the pleasure of meeting at development camp. He runs the site What the puck? and you can also follow him on Twitter. He’s a huge fan of the Flyers. Below, he gives up the top five reasons why he loves the organization. 1. The History I’ve found this to be the most intriguing recently. While other teams have a rich and historic back catalogue (see: Canadiens, Maple Leafs etc etc), no one else in this league is still defined by a nickname they earned 40 years ago. Just a few …
Holmgren on Pronger
Q: Did he go to the hospital? A: “No, our eye doctor came here. He’s going to see the eye doctor every day for the next four days. We think after that time that he’ll be out of, we don’t want to say danger, but if everything goes ok and if the swelling goes down, he should start on some kind of an exercise program shortly after that, and we’re hoping he’ll be able to rejoin the team within ten days to two weeks. And skating-wise, not necessarily playing wise.” Q: Is there a prognosis on it? A: “Well, not really. …
Revisiting the painkiller problem
After the tragic losses of NHL enforcers due to suicide or overdoses this off-season, a handful of former players spoke out about the elephant in the room. “Today the biggest problem, which isn’t talked about…is pills,” said Ian Laperriere. It’s painkillers.” In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Laperriere said that painkillers were appropriate when necessary but that some players were taking them just for the buzz. He suggested that he saw four or five guys on each of his former teams taking pills, whether or not they were needed. “There is also a huge, huge problem when guys take them …
Holmgren/Jagr transcript 9/17/11
PAUL HOLMGREN: We just wanted more than anything to give Jaromir a chance to take care of you guys, and give you a chance to meet him and talk to him. We’re obviously very excited to have Jaromir join us this summer through free agency, and bring him back to the NHL. We feel he’s still going to be a good player in our league, and we’re looking forward to seeing him do good things for the Flyers this year. Q: Why was this the right fit for you at this point? JAROMIR JAGR: Well, I already answered that question …
Holmgren updated
On Tuesday, the Flyers issued an update on the condition of general manager Paul Holmgren. “Holmgren was injured in a bicycle accident at the South Jersey shore on Monday, Sept. 5.” Holmgren also released the following statement to the media early this morning: “[I am] sore, but otherwise in good spirits.” President & Chief Operating Officer of Comcast-Spectacor Peter A. Luukko also gave the following statement and account of what happened: “It appears that he might have hit a rut or something as he was biking in Avalon. I know Paul, he’s pretty fast on that bike so he probably …
